The 131st graduation commencement exercises at the Salem High School will feature the Class of 2016 and it will be held at 7:00 Friday evening at the Salem High School football stadium. It is anticipated that 142 seniors will receive their diplomas at the exercises. The Class of 2016 has six Valedictorians and they are Alexander Major, Josh Sirois, Zach Erway, Brenna Tatom, Mackenzie Teague and Sydney Wood. The lone Salutatorian is Madison Knight. These students will be speaking at the exercises. Other awards to be presented will be the Senior Class Citizenship Awards, the School Citizenship Award and the Best All-Around Boy and Girls Awards. Different to the ceremony this year will be the Band performing "Pomp and Circumstance" as the students make their way on the track to their seats as well as a performance by the band after the choir performs. Also, there will be no scholarships awarded during the ceremony as they were presented at a ceremony in April. In case of inclement weather, the exercises will be held in the Senior High School Gymnasium. That determination will be made by 3:15 Friday afternoon. Currently the Salem Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred on Monday, May 16th at approximately 3:05 AM at the Crossroads Inn on Missouri Highway 19 South. At this time we are compiling information to obtain an accurate suspect description to release to the public at the earliest date possible. If you have any information or were in the area during the time of the incident, we encourage you to call and provide the information and/or observations to aid in the investigation. The Salem Police Department released reports involving theft of fuel, tampering with a vehicle, a phone card scam, assault and theft. On Sunday, May 8th at 2:17 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Phil-Mart Highway 19 in reference to theft of fuel. The investigation of the report revealed the driver of a black 2000 Dodge truck pumped $10.00 in fuel and left without paying. The driver was later located by an officer and returned to pay for the fuel. It was determined the driver forgot to pay after pumping the fuel. At 8:55 that night, an officer was sent to a residence in the 400 block of East First Street in reference to tampering with a vehicle. That Investigation revealed someone unknown put gravel in a fuel tank of a maroon 1999 Dodge Caravan. On Monday morning, May 9th at 9:35, an officer was dispatched to Mobil on Highway 19 in reference to a phone card scam. The investigation of the report revealed an unknown person identifying himself as an internet tech fraudulently obtained information over the phone and stole $500.00 from an account. Later that morning at 11:18, an officer was sent to the Salem High School in reference to an assault. That investigation revealed a 16-year old male juvenile of Salem had assaulted a 15-year old male juvenile of Salem. The juvenile suspect was detained and later released to his parent. The report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office for further review. That afternoon at 1:30, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed a patron who used the self checkout left $20.00 in the change return and walked out of the store. Further investigation of the video surveillance revealed a female who used the self checkout next took the money and left with it. Anyone with any information on any ongoing investigation is asked to call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their May meeting tonight at the Salem R-80 Boardroom beginning at 6:00 PM. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent John McColloch will update the Board on MAP/EOC testing and there will be a budget update. Principals from the respective buildings will updated the Board on various events and happenings. In new business, the Board will consider the Healthy Dent County renewal as well as consider MSBA policies and procedures 2016A updates. The Board will then approve a professional development plan for 2016/2017 and approve building handbooks. The Board will also consider a salary schedule increase and then address resignations. The will vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel and students. The May meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

Jon Arzt threw 6 2/3 innings of three-hit ball and Kory Ramsey got the save striking out the only man he faced as the Salem Baseball Tigers won the Class 4 District 9 Championship over the St. Francis Borgia Knights, 3-0. Ramsey had an RBI single and Arzt drove in two runs with a fielder’s choice all in the 6th inning. Salem is now 14-11 and they will play Tuesday against the winner of the Class 4 District 10 champion which will be determined today.

Adam Wainwright threw six-hit ball into the seventh inning in his best start of the season and Matt Holliday had a two-run double for the St. Louis Cardinals, who ended the Colorado Rockies' five-game winning streak with a 2-0 victory Wednesday night. The Cardinals play the Rockies at 5:15 you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Royals and Red Sox played a doubleheader Wednesday. The Royals won the opener 3-2 behind a strong performance by Ian Kennedy. Jackie Bradley Jr. and Mookie Betts homered and the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 on Wednesday night to salvage a split of their day-night doubleheader.

The St. Louis Blues will be in San Jose for Game 3 of their best-of-seven series starting at 8:00. The series is tied at one game apiece. You can hear the Blues game on ksmoradio.com and also on KSMO Radio after Cards baseball.

Funeral services for Dale Hodges of Salem, age 76, will be held today at 1:00 at the Dent County James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Doris Lee Norris of Kirkwood, formerly of St. James, age 91, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

Funeral services for Brenda Louise Asher of Bixby, age 68, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Crocker-Stricklin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Crocker-Stricklin Cemetery.

Memorial Services for Daniel Lee Pratt of St. James, age 58, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the St. James Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary.

Funeral services for Rosetta “Rosie” Anna Hubert of Sullivan, age 77, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 Saturday. Interment will be in the Martin-Trask Cemetery in Cherryville.
