missourinetLOCAL NEWS:

Salem has been selected as one of three Missouri communities to receive the Community Foundation of the Ozarks’ first-ever economic development grant. Salem, along with Marshfield and Sarcoxie, is an inaugural participant in the Growth in the Rural Ozarks (GRO) program, a three-year initiative co-funded by the CFO and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and supported by the Dent County Community Foundation, aimed at promoting job creation, entrepreneurship and economic and workforce development in the rural Ozarks. GRO will be facilitated by JumpStart, Inc., a northeast Ohio-based economic development and entrepreneurship firm, and supported by the Dent County Community Foundation, municipal and county governments, school districts, chambers of commerce and other local entities. Salem was selected by a Community Foundation of the Ozarks volunteer committee through a competitive process. To help gather data about Salem and the perceptions of the city by its residents, JumpStart asks citizens and stakeholders to complete an online “Voice of the Community” survey, which can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Salem-VOC. The CFO Board of Directors has committed $55,000 per year for three years to the GRO program, with an anticipated USDA rural development match of $50,000 for 2016-17. The CFO will apply for USDA assistance for up to three years. Local stakeholders were required to contribute at least $5,000 per city for a total investment of more than $300,000 in these three communities for the duration of the program. The City of Salem and the Dent County Commission have each approved contributing $2,500 toward the cost of the program. The GRO outline calls for a three-year planning and implementation process, with JumpStart professionals working with local stakeholders to initiate the plan. JumpStart’s mission is to strengthen the economic vitality by helping communities realize their entrepreneurial potential. JumpStart – which grew out of a program of the Cleveland (Ohio) Foundation – has nearly 15 years of experience in working with communities to reach their economic development potential, stressing a unique partnership between public and private entities charged with creating economic transformation through the growth of an entrepreneurial ecosystem. USDA Rural Development Missouri State Director Janie Dunning stated that rural development has a strong emphasis on economic development in communities. Economic development activities are ongoing and they are critical to our goal of improving the lives of individuals and families residing in rural Missouri. Through revitalization and development, the Community Foundation of the Ozarks is doing great things for the region. By helping the cities of Salem, Marshfield and Sarcoxie, they are taking the right steps to strengthen and identify the needs of these communities through new partnerships, resources and networks.  The Dent County

Community Foundation is one of the 49 affiliate foundations of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. It serves Salem and Dent County through asset and resource development, philanthropic leadership and community grant making. The DCCF holds assets of more than $1.9 million dollars as of March 31st of this year.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 17th was postponed and rescheduled for Tuesday, May 31st due to a number of scheduling conflicts.

An accident occurred on Tuesday, May 10th at 7:55 in the morning on Highway 32 at Walker Street in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 1999 Chevrolet Tracker driven by Marilyn Bennett of Salem was following behind a 1987 Chevrolet CK 1500 driven by Donavon Spurgin of Salem on West highway 32 in the right hand lane near Walker Street. At that time, a 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 driven by Wesley Connell of Salem was also traveling west on Highway 32 in the left lane, just slightly back from the Tracker. An unknown vehicle was in front of the CK 1500, slowing to turn onto Walker Street. The CK 1500 also slowed for the unknown vehicle to turn and the Tracker following the CK 1500 slowed, then veered to the left into the left lane and into the path of the Sierra 1500. The Sierra 1500 attempted to avoid the Tracker, but struck the Tracker in the left rear, pushing the Tracker in a clockwise rotation to the northwest. Bennett lost control of the Tracker, and the vehicle spun around striking the CK 1500 in the left rear, and then spun around and collided with the Sierra 1500 on the passenger side. The Tracker continued and came to rest in the right westbound lane of Highway 32. The driver side tire of the Tracker was sitting on the sidewalk of Highway 32. No injuries were reported. The Chevrolet Tracker sustained extensive damage. The GMC Sierra 1500 sustained moderate damage while the Chevrolet CK 1500 had minor damage.
