missourinetLOCAL NEWS:

Monday morning at approximately 3:05, Salem Police officers were detailed to the Crossroads Inn in reference to an attempted armed robbery. The investigation of the report revealed the night clerk was confronted by an armed unidentified white male who demanded money while displaying a handgun. A struggle ensued and a shot was fired striking the clerk. The man fled the scene on foot and the clerk was treated for the gunshot wound which was non-life threatening. The suspect has still not been located and the report remains under investigation. If you have any information concerning this incident, please contact the Salem Police Department at (573) 729-4242.

Roads continue to be an issue in some parts of the county as reported at the Dent County Commissioners meeting Monday morning. District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said a tree had to be removed that fell across Dent County Road 5615, and grading continues on county road 6500 and 6505 also known as the White Oak Hollow Road. Purcell indicated grading would be done on some roads close to the city limits of Salem like the Dents Ford Road and Maledy Ford Road. Purcell went on to say a man would be stockpiling base rock and that workers will be digging out a area that is sinking on Wednesday on Dent County Road 4180 and put in new base rock. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said his crews are still checking for downed trees and washouts in some areas of the county from the rains last week. Larson stated materials would be added and patch grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4283 and 5240, while materials only would be added to county roads 2533 and 2540. Larson also stated he was planning to attend the USDA Community Connect Broadband Grant in Columbia to be held today from 1:00 to 4:00. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said he attended the MRPC External Relations Committee meeting on Thursday of last week and it was decided that this year’s MRPC Annual Awards Dinner would be held at Belle on Thursday, October 20th at the Belle Community Center. Skiles also said he would be attending the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District Executive Board meeting today. The next meeting of the commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

On Friday, April 29th at 4:43 in the afternoon, an accident occurred on Highway 32 at Highway 19. According to the Salem Police report, 1997 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Emily Watkins of Bunker was stopped in traffic behind a 1996 Ford Taurus driven by Helen Baker of Salem. The Taurus started in traffic and the Crown Victoria started in traffic and collided with the Taurus from behind. No injuries were reported. Both vehicles sustained minor damage. Baker and a passenger reported injuries. The passenger was transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital while Baker drove to the hospital for treatment. Both vehicles were driven from the scene. Witnesses indicated that the vehicles did not hit hard.

The Salem Board of Aldermen met for their regular meeting Monday evening at the City Hall Council Chambers. Alderwoman Molly Zettel was unable to attend due to her doctor’s orders, but earlier she was sworn in as alderman at the City Administrative offices. The board approved re-electing Dr. Haydn Powell as the board president for the next year.  After the consent agenda, the board approved City Attorney William Camm Seay to draw up an ordinance for any business that uses over 400,000 gallons to have the reduced sewer rate. Seay said that an ordinance cannot pertain to a single business like it does a government entity like the Salem Housing Authority. Seay also said the 400,000 gallon figure was not derived by the utility committee in their recommendation to lower the sewer rate and the ordinance shouldn’t be passed until that part of the ordinance has been discussed. Alderwoman Zettel is the chair of the Utility Committee and she is not expected back until the June meetings. City Administrator Ray Walden reported he attended a Missouri City and County Managers meeting where alternative approaches to financing were discussed that he will present at a later time. Walden wanted to thank Becki Heathman and Sarah Massengale for their work for the “Feels Like Home’ Tour held last Tuesday. The MCB and DED will be sending out a written summary of what they found in Salem and Dent County in the next couple of weeks. Walden said he has some public interest in the old middle school gym and cafeteria. He would like to have an engineering firm do a preliminary study to see how sound the buildings are and what would need to be done to re-purpose those buildings. He would like city employees to go in and remove the debris as well as the walls and ceiling in the cafeteria on rainy days to make the engineering work easier. The board approved his request to look into this matter. City Attorney received board permission to publish a Notice of Nuisance Violation in the Salem News for property owned by Eldon and Pamela Gott at 816 East Hunt Street. This action included the ability to solicit bids to clean up the property. The board approved the standing committees prepared by Mayor Nash with the exception of Stacy Kirker on the Park Board who resigned. The board then went into closed session.
