Earl Forrest of Salem, who killed Harriett Smith and Michael Wells in a drug dispute and then deputy JoAnn Barnes in a subsequent shootout back in 2002, was put to death Wednesday evening in Bonne Terre in what could be Missouri's last execution for some time. Earlier Wednesday, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon denied clemency for Forrest saying that his decision upholds the decision handed down by the jury that was upheld by state and federal courts. Also, the U.S. Supreme Court denied an attempt to stay the execution based that the death penalty is unconstitutional.
