The National Park Service is proposing, in cooperation with The Ozark Trail Association (OTA), a new segment of the Ozark Trail that will extend from Current River State Park to Brushy Creek in Shannon County, Missouri. This proposed trail will be part of the Ozark Trail system, a designated National Recreation Trail.  Currently, this area does not have any long distance hiking opportunities. The proposed trail will be constructed and maintained exclusively by OTA resources comparable to the operational methods that are used to maintain other sections of the Ozark Trail. The OTA is a volunteer- based 501(c)3 organization founded in 2002 which has constructed over 50 miles of new trail and contributes 10,000 hours annually toward maintaining the Ozark Trail. The Environmental Assessment for the Ozark Trail Association – Current River Trail Project will be available for public review and comment until May 19, 2016. Detailed information about the project and the opportunity to submit comments can be found at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/ozar.

The days are getting warmer, which means destructive, furry varmints are busy tearing up lawns and damaging plants. It’s time once again for moles and voles to go after your lawn and garden. Most homeowners will notice a network of tunnels that have this inch-and-a-half to 2-inch diameter holes where the moles and voles can enter and exit. A mole will generally remain underground and not come to the surface, but most people are familiar with the feeding tunnels and molehills they make. Voles are much smaller than moles. Voles are herbivores, while moles are carnivores, eating mostly earthworms and grubs. Even though moles don’t damage plants, their raised tunnels can be a source of frustration for homeowners. Trapping is the most economical control method. The key to trapping success is finding and active tunnel. By poking holes into the top of the tunnels, the mole will come back and plug up those holes in an active runaway. That’s where you set your trap. There are harpoon traps, choker types and scissor traps available. Controlling voles requires a different approach since voles tend to live in colonies. To control voles, find the entrance and exit holes and place poison baits in the holes. For more information on controlling varmints in your yard go to http://extention.missouri.edu.
