The Salem Area Community Betterment Association is hosting the Missouri Community Betterment and Missouri Department of Economic Development “Feels Like Home Tour” in Salem on Tuesday, May 10th starting at 9:30 in the morning with a group orientation followed by a tour of Salem. A team of about 20 individuals will visit Salem representing state agencies such as economic development, transportation, tourism, electric utilities, USDA – Rural Development, and several more. There will be three roundtable discussions held through the day concerning tourism, economic development and community development with a number of speakers providing insights and more. The goal of the tour is to highlight successes, opportunities and challenges particularly related to the economic development and tourism in Salem/Dent County. The resource assessment team will meet in the afternoon, digest the information they have been presented and then will provide recommendations and resources to assist with community efforts.

An accident occurred Saturday afternoon at 3:20 in Dent County on Route FF about a mile east of Highway 72. According to the highway patrol report, an eastbound 2013 Ford Transit, driven by 46 year-old Rommel C. Cowan of Salem, traveled off the right side of the roadway. Cowan overcorrected causing the Ford to travel off the left side of the roadway and then overturn. According to the report, Cowan sustained minor injuries and was wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. He was transported to Salem Memorial District Hospital by EMS. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

An accident happened in Crawford County Sunday morning at 11:00 on Highway 19 just south of the Freeman Cemetery Road. According to the highway patrol report, a 1989 Ford Truck driven southbound by 24-year old Buck Prater of Salem, traveled off the right side of the roadway. Prater overcorrected and the truck returned to the roadway and crossed the center line. Prater overcorrected again and the truck went off the right side of the road again and overturned. The truck came to rest on its wheels in the roadway. Prater suffered minor injuries in the accident as he was wearing a seat restraint, and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Steelville Ambulance. The Ford Truck was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol recognized 26 employees at the Patrol's annual awards banquet for outstanding service in 2015 this past weekend. Receiving a life saving award from Troop I was Corporal Kyle Wilmont. On May 28, 2015, Wilmont, Troop I, and Dent County deputies responded to a residence after a report of an unresponsive female. Upon arriving, Wilmont located the female in a recliner. She was unresponsive and was not breathing. Wilmont spoke to her, but she did not respond. He located a low, weak pulse at her carotid artery, then noticed the female was breathing very slow, shallow breaths every 10 seconds. Over the next five to 10 minutes, Wilmont administered vigorous sternum rubs as needed to restore the female to consciousness and made sure her head was tilted back in order to open her airway. Medical personnel arrived and transported her to Salem Memorial District Hospital. The paramedics indicated Wilmont’s action saved this woman’s life. Also from the area receiving the MASTERS Public Service Award was Corporal Joseph T. Peart from Troop I. He is involved with numerous public service-oriented programs on both a local and state level. In his hometown community of Cuba, Peart is active within the Cuba school system. He was instrumental in organizing the “Cruise with a Cop” program, which established a system for students to earn points based on good behavior. Students with enough points enjoy treats at Sonic or McDonald’s with Peart and area troopers. Additional points will allow a student to participate in “Team Time,” an interactive sports program where students play basketball or dodge ball with local officers. Peart and the other officers take these opportunities to visit with the students about school, hobbies, and other areas of interest. Peart often stops by the schools in his zone to eat lunch with the students and interact with all of them, not just students who have earned points in the Cruise with a Cop program. He is connected with the youth in the community through 4-H, shaping future leaders in the livestock production program, and he is heavily involved with Special Olympics Missouri.

University of Missouri Extension will hold an informational meeting on the new Food and Drug Administration’s Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) Rules on Tuesday, May, 10 at 6:30 pm at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room in Salem. Effective January 1, 2017 livestock producers who wish to use feed grade antibiotics will be required to have a VFD.  Dr. Craig Payne, MU Extension Veterinarian will explain the new rules, changes in antibiotic labeling, and how producers should start preparing now if they want to use antibiotics in their feed or mineral supplements next year. There is no charge for the meeting. For more information, please contact Ted Cunningham, MU Extension Livestock Specialist at 729-3196 or cunninghamtc@missouri.edu.
