An accident occurred at 7:26 Wednesday night in Dent County on Highway 32 about 15 miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Ford Ranger driven by 51-year old Alisha Callahan of Potosi was traveling westbound on highway 32. The accident occurred when the Ford Ranger ran off the right side of the road. Callahan then overcorrected and the Ford Ranger ran off the left side of the roadway striking a tree. Callahan and a passenger, 76-year old Margie Barton of Bixby both suffered minor injuries. Both were transported by private vehicle to the Salem Memorial Hospital. Everyone was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Ranger sustained extensive damage and was towed by Abney’s Towing.

Highway 32 in Iron County will be reduced to one lane as the Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. This section of roadway is located from Highway 21 to Iron County Road 40. Weather permitting, the work will take place on Tuesday, August 9th and Wednesday, August 10th from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of July. During the month, they wrote one equipment repair order, 14 summons to appear in court, eight warning tickets, and 13 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated one report of child abuse, 14 accidents, one assault, two burglaries, one report of child molestation, two reports of city nuisances/panhandling, one report of domestic assault, 10 reports of domestic violence, four reports of driving while intoxicated, two reports of driving while license is revoked and/or suspended, one report of driving while license is expired and/or without a valid license, one report of endangering the welfare of a child, one report of indecent exposure, two reports of leaving the scene of an accident and two repots of a minor in possession of intoxicants. The department also investigated five reports of property damage, 15 reports of stealing, one report of trespassing and two 96-hour commitments. They also investigated two reports of possession amphetamine, one report of possession of heroin, one report of possession of marijuana, one report of possession of opium or derivative and three reports of possession of drug paraphernalia. The police department received 999 calls for service during the month, handled 120 walk-ins to the station, redirected 40 calls to the animal control officer and conducted three death investigations. They spent 20 hours in court testifying and four hours as court bailiff. The calls in The Salem Police Department drove a total of 7,119 miles and arrested 20 males and 7 females during the month of July.

The Salem R-80 School District will continue to conduct pre-registrations before school starts for the 2016/2017 school year. Incoming juniors at the Salem R-80 High School can register today in the High School Gym Lobby from 1:00 to 7:00 PM. Registration for 10th graders will be held on Monday, August 8th and freshmen may register on Tuesday, August 9th. A parent or guardian needs to be with the student at the time of registration in order to complete all district required forms. Visitors are invited to join researcher and master bird bander Lanny Chambers as he captures and studies hummingbirds at Montauk State Park near Salem. The event will take place between 9:00 AM and noon on Sunday, August 7th at the Hummingbird Garden in front of the Dorman L. Steelman Lodge. Guests will be able to learn about the secret world of hummingbirds as they are banded and released Chambers. This event is free to the public. Montauk State Park is located 22 miles southwest of Salem on Highway 119 in Dent County. An accident happened Thursday afternoon at 4:48 in Phelps County on Interstate 44 at the 193.6 westbound mile marker. According to the highway patrol report, a 1995 Ford F-150 driven westbound by 64-year old Cathryn Bunch of Steelville, traveled off the right side of the road, struck a ditch, entered the North Outer Road and overturned. Bunch suffered moderate injuries. She was taken by the EMS to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Bunch was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident.

By state law, the Missouri sales tax holiday begins today and will continue through Sunday. The three-day holiday began at 12:01 this morning and runs through Sunday, August 7 at midnight. Certain back-to-school purchases, such as clothing, school supplies, computers, and other items as defined by the statute, are exempt from sales tax for this time period only. Both Salem and Dent County are recognizing the sales tax holiday this year.

Brandon Phillips had three hits and left-hander Brandon Finnegan allowed one hit in six innings on Thursday, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 7-0 victory and a rare series win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Reds took two of three in the series between the NL Central rivals. Mike Leake (8-9) took the loss for the Cardinals who will be home for the start of a three game set with Atlanta starting tonight at 6:15 on KSMO Radio.

Brad Miller hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning off Joakim Soria (4-5), who gave up three of the Rays' overall four hits during his one inning and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Thursday. Ian Kennedy gave up just one hit, walked four and had nine strikeouts in his six-plus innings for the Royals. Alex Gordon hit his eighth home run in the game for Kansas City who will host Toronto to start a three game series.

Funeral services for Kenneth A. Salts of Rolla, age 73, will be held today at 1:00 at the Ridgeview Christian Church in Rolla. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Christian Campus Fellowship. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

A Memorial Service for Billie Jean Gamblin of Salem, age 77, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Estep Cemetery at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Billie Gamblin family.

A Memorial Service for Eula May Fudge of Licking, age 63, will be held this Saturday afternoon at 2:00 Fox Funeral Chapel in Licking. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time Saturday.
