The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening at the City Hall Council Chambers. Alderwoman Molly Zettel was ill and was not able to attend. Because of her illness, the agenda items that included her oath of office and the organization of the Board of Alderman were postponed until the next meeting. Under the hearing of persons, Davis Pierce was on the agenda to speak about creating a “round up” program to help pay utility bills for the critically disabled citizens, but he was not present at the meeting. The board also postponed any decision on the Heartland Metal Sewer Rate since Zettel was not able to attend, but City Attorney William Camm Seay said he would need to change the wording on any ordinance that came from this decision on Heartland Metal to make that rate available to any business that uses the same or greater amount of water. City Administrator Ray Walden said the students from the MS&T management class made their presentations at a dinner at the Salem Community Center at the Armory. Walden said the student’s ideas and suggestions would be shared with other committees and groups who are looking into those areas. He said there was very good turn out at the Business Expo sponsored by the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, KSMO Radio and Salem Publishing Co. Walden reported there were 5,629 people who utilized the Salem Community Center in April and that the Community Foundation of the Ozarks is in the process of creating a new Fireworks Fund to collect contributions from private citizens or businesses. Walden wanted to remind everyone that this and next week is Spring Clean-Up Weeks and people may place numerous items curbside to be removed. You CANNOT throw away tires, car or outdoor batteries, liquid paint, oil or other similar synthetic products. The city wide yard sale will be this Saturday and spaces to sell your items are still available at the Salem City Administrative Building Parking Lot. Please call Karen at city hall at 729-4811 to reserve your spaces by this Friday or drop by. The spaces are reserved on a first come-first served basis. Walden said on May 10th, there will be a “Feels Like Home” Tour from the Missouri Department of Economic Development and the Missouri Community Betterment Association which is a tourism and economic development program to help Salem develop new strategies for the future. Mayor Brad Nash in his report wants to check ordinances that deal with dilapidated houses to see if the process can be sped up, especially for the cutting of tall grass. He also said the new handrails and the pavilion are now up at the City Park around the new playground equipment. Mayor Nash postponed announcing the standing committees until he has a full board. The board did approve appointing Melody Fortner to the Library Board to replace Joe Brand who recently resigned from the board. The board went into closed session with no votes taken. The meeting was then adjourned.

An accident occurred at 5:00 PM on Monday, May 2nd on Highway 32 West about 12 miles from Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1995 GMC Sierra driven by 35-year old Angelique Manley of Beulah began to slow in order to make a left hand turn, when a 2011 GMC Denali driven by 66-year old George Becker of Black attempted to overtake the Sierra. The Denali was then struck by the Sierra. The Denali traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck an embankment. Becker suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem EMS. A passenger in the Sierra, 43-year old Michael McNeill of Beulah suffered minor injuries and was also transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem EMS. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The GMC Sierra sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene while the GMC Denali sustained moderate damage and was towed by Whitaker’s.
