The Dent County Commission met Thursday morning for their regular meeting at the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Roads 6410 and 6670. He said grading would be done on Dent County Road 6660 and brush was going to be cut on county road 5610. Purcell said a man would be hauling brown rock, and patch work would be done to the chip and seal surface on Dent County Road 5013 if time permits. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson indicated grading would be done and materials added to Dent County Road 2500 while grading only would be done on county roads 3120 and 3130. Larson said materials would be added to Dent County Road 2530 and work is going to be done on grader #28 as it has a hydraulic leak. Larson went on to report that a backhoe was being sent down to county road 4280 to remove the debris in front of the culvert pipes brought in by beavers. Larson told the commission that he needs to put bids out for a used 4X4 pickup. The year range is from 2009-2012 and they would prefer a ¾ ton pickup, but they will consider a 1/2 ton. The bids are due in the Dent County Clerk’s office by May 12th at 10:30 when the bids will be open. The commission will also be looking for bids on a used dump truck for District 2. See the county clerk’s office for all the specifications for the dump truck bid. The dump truck bids will be due on May 16th at 10:00 in the morning and they will be opened at that time. All bids must be submitted in a sealed envelope and mark on the envelope “sealed bid” and for which truck you are bidding. Bids can be mailed to the Dent County Clerk, 400 North Main, Salem, MO 65560 or can be dropped off in her office. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said he attended the Our Missouri Waters Initiative for the Upper and Lower Meramec River meeting held at the Meramec State Park in Sullivan. Skiles said there were about 35 people in attendance including two from Dent County as he and Bobby Simpson were there and Simpson spoke on behalf of the cattlemen’s association. This was the last scheduled meeting on the initiative in our area as there doesn’t appear to be any problems on the upper half of the river except maybe some stream bank erosion that landowners could work with local Soil and Water Conservation Districts. Skiles went on to say that Dent County is in strong financial shape while other neighboring counties are having some budget issues and asking for a voluntary reduction in some budgets of up to 15-20 percent.  The Commissioners voted to contact Shive-Hattery Engineering to start negotiations on a contract for a new Justice and Jail Center. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
