missourinetThe Salem Police Department released their reports involving damage to private property, a shoplifter, a possible scam and a traffic violation. On Thursday, April 14th at 11:55 PM, an officer located a 21-year old Salem female in the 800 block of East Ellis who had and active arrest warrant from Phelps County. She was taken into custody on the warrant and later released with a date to appear in court after posting bond. At 11:53 AM on Friday, April 15th an officer was sent to a residence in the 100 block of South Washington in reference to damage to private property. The Investigation of the report revealed someone unknown damaged a window and screen valued at $300. That afternoon at 4:19, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 30-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise valued $118.58. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that same afternoon at 5:11, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a possible scam. Investigation of this report revealed that a person or persons unknown hacked a Facebook profile and sent messages to friends associated to that profile asking for help and requesting money. The Facebook account holder who was from Newark, Ohio, contacted the Salem Police Department before sending any money and it was found that the scam involved a 57-year old male of Salem. The scam involves transferring money via Western Union, Money Gram or other means by means of people unwittingly making the transfers. The scam is delivered through a network of people who believe they are each transferring money for a different reason from one to the other. The end result is that the money that is sent ends up in a foreign country making it nearly impossible to track, investigate or get back. Please be aware of these types of scams which can be perpetuated through Facebook, phone calls, text, by mail or email. Remember to never give out your personal information such as social security numbers, credit card numbers, your date of birth and address or any account numbers to include online accounts or passwords to anyone that you do not know or is reputable.
