missourinetThe Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5410, 5440, 6600 and 6620. He said materials would be added to county roads 5160, 4090 and 4155, while brush would be cut on county road 5680 and two trucks were going to be hauling brown rock.  Purcell also said that he attended the Tourism Committee meeting on Monday where two proposals and one reimbursement were approved. He added that on Tuesday he attended the South Central Missouri Community Action Agency meeting in Winona. According to Purcell, State Park Youth Corp applications are available on line at www.thinkoutside.mo.gov for both Current River State Park and Echo Bluff State Park. The job opportunities are for 17-24 year olds for up to 300 hours at $8.50 per hour. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that materials would be added to and grading done on Dent County Road 5320, while materials only would be added to county road 2570. He added that due to the accident last week, he’s short a truck, plus the only big truck he has left has developed some noise and is in the shop being worked on. Larson went on to say that he has a man screening brown rock and he expects to hear any time on the insurance settlement on the totaled truck. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said he had been in contact with Tammy Snodgrass at MRPC about setting up the Hazard Mitigation Plan for Dent County. Snodgrass is contacting SEMA to see if grants are still available for developing the plan. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that bills were being paid. Skiles presented the Salem Chamber of Commerce Agreement for services and the Commissioners voted 3-0 to sign the agreement. The next meeting of the Commissioners is Monday morning at 9:00 in the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The 2016 Business Expo will be held on Saturday morning from 9:00 until noon at Salem Community Center @ the Armory, located at 1200 West Rolla Road. The Business Expo is an excellent opportunity for businesses to advertise their products and services and many of them will be giving away promotional items or have their own drawing. There are seven star giveaways this year and they are provided by the Salem Memorial District Hospital Family Medicine, Aarons, the Universal Challenge Center, the Salem News, the City of Salem, Healthy Dent County and Town and Country Bank. There is no cost to attend the annual Expo, it’s FREE and open to the public. It is organized by the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Salem Publishing Company and KSMO Radio. There will be food concessions available for purchase such as fresh fruit in waffle bowls, yogurt parfaits, smoothies, coffee and water by Healthy Dent County during the event. An accident occurred Wednesday night at 10:25 in Dent County at the intersection of Highway C and H in Lenox. According to the highway patrol report, a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze driven by 21-year old Brenden Brown of Edgar Sprigs was traveling westbound on highway H. The Chevrolet Cruze traveled through the intersection of highway C, went off the roadway and struck a concrete barrier. Brown suffered minor injuries and was transported by Salem EMS to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Cruze sustained moderate damage and was towed by Lucas Garage. The highway patrol was assisted by the Dent County Sheriff’s Department and the Lenox Fire Department.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways is hosting a river cleanup effort today and Saturday, April 22nd along the Current and Jacks Fork Rivers. Staff from Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Ozark Heritage Project, park concessionaires, local chambers of commerce, area schools, youth groups, and volunteers will band together to tackle litter in the rivers and along the roads and accesses of the park. You can register ahead of time or from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. each day at the following sites: Alley Spring river landing, Round Spring lower-river landing, Two Rivers landing and Akers Ferry upper river landing. The staff at the registration sites will provide trash bags and river bags for your convenience. Dumpsters and recycling trailers will also be available for trash disposal throughout the park. Cody Manthey went 4-4 with 5 RBI and he scored three times as the Salem Tigers thumped Willow Springs Thursday, 20-3. Jon Arzt went 3-3 with a homer and three RBI as Salem is now 10-8 on the year on the year and 3-2 in the SCA. Salem will play Thayer Monday at 4:30.

Patrick Kane scored on a backhander early in the second overtime and the Chicago Blackhawks avoided first-round elimination with a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues early Friday. The Blues will face the Blackhawks on Saturday.

The St. Louis Cardinals will start a three game series in San Diego tonight beginning at 8:45 with the pre-game show and 9:40 game time on KSMO Radio.

Edinson Volquez tossed seven sharp innings, Mike Moustakas went deep and the Kansas City Royals pounded Mike Pelfrey in a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night. Tonight the Royals start a three game series with the Orioles at 7:15.

Memorial services for Jonas Edwin “Ed” Wethy of Salem, age 53, will be held this morning at 11:30 at the Round Pond Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Funeral services for Vadna (Rasor) Stagner of Strafford, formerly of Salem, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from noon until service time on Friday. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Funeral services for Edgar Eugene Perkins of Minneapolis, Minnesota, age 85, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Dent County/James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Peggy Cubbage of Salem, age 74, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the Dent County/James & Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00-7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Masonic services for Winton Arthur “Butch” Albert of Salem, age 80, will be held Monday at 7:00 with funeral services immediately following with Full Military Honors at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 6:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Shepherd Hills Cemetery in Barnhart at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Winton Albert family.

Graveside services for Harrison Turner, age 52, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Williams Cemetery in Licking. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Hunter Michael Robbers of Salem, age 18 months, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Fox Funeral Home Chapel in Licking. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time Tuesday.

 Funeral services for June Y. Coryell of Salem, age 92, will be held Friday, April 29th at 11:00 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Dent County Memorial/James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
