missourinetThe Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their meeting Tuesday evening in the hospital library. After Attorney Mark Weaver swore in Dennis Fiebelman on the hospital Board of Directors, the Board approved their minutes from the March 22nd meeting. During the summary of operations and statistics report for March, Chief Financial Officer, Monica Gargus stated that inpatient admissions and emergency room visits were above the monthly budgeted while outpatient registrations were down. The hospital had a gain from operations of $201,665. During the month, the cash flow statement showed an increase in cash of $21,841. Days in Accounts Receivables rose to 55. Chief Nursing Officer Mary Lou Brooks reported during the month there were 82 acute care admissions as well as 849 emergency room visits with an average turnaround time of 132 minutes. Also during the month, there were 231 ambulance runs with 174 patients transported to the hospital, 44 surgery cases, 1,632 outpatient registrations, 197 home health visits, 7,923 lab tests, 1,057 radiological procedures, 192 CT scans, 23 MRI scans, 17 nuclear med scans, 654 rehab treatments, 146 dialysis treatments and 287 clinical visits of which 120 were for podiatry. Brooks also reported there have been 47 confirmed influenza cases to date. Hospital Administrator Kasey Lucas reported that the Hospital Auxiliary held a meeting April 5th with 11 members attending and the next meeting will be held Tuesday, May 3rd at noon at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. There will be no Auxiliary meetings in June, July or August. Fundraisers are set for September 7th with Books Are Fun at the hospital library, September 22nd and 23rd which will be the Masquerade Jewelry sale at the Dent County Fire Station. New this year on October 13th and 14th will be the Purse Palooza at the Dent County Fire Station, and on October 27th,  Scrubs and Beyond will be held in the hospital library. Mary Lou Brooks reported that a total of 832 community surveys were turned in which was almost double the 475 from the last survey taken three years ago. Brooks did state that the top three "health problems" per the surveys in Dent County were: alcohol/drug abuse, cancer and obesity. Hospital Administrator Kasey Lucas reported that a Health Screening will be held May 11th and 12th. Lucas stated that the SMDH Foundation Advisory Board did add some members and the SMDH Foundation Program will be holding a Foundation Golf Tournament on Monday, May 9th at the Spring Creek Golf Club in Salem. There is room for 16 teams of 4 persons for $300 a team or $75 a person. Lunch and dinner will be provided. The Board then approved the budgeted purchase of a new floor buffer. They had previous budgeted for two floor buffers but are only asking for one at this time. The Board approved the purchase of the Advance Pacesetter 20" HD One Speed Floor Buffer from Hillyard for $1,098 as a replacement. In non-budgeted items, the Board approved for replacement from A&W Communications X10DR-XU1 Extender Units for the EMS personnel to take the place of the repeaters and at quite a savings of not having to replace all the radios currently used for $13,408. The Board also approved for replacement a Sawyer Mail System from Neopost for $18,360 and a CT Scanner from GE for $604,061 with the first year of the service contract free with annual payments of $65,713 for the following four years. Lucas informed the Board the hospital will ask for bids for surplus property: a Woods 3-point mower. The Board then voted to go into closed session.

This Saturday at The Centre in Rolla from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Congressman Jason Smith will be holding a recognition ceremony in Rolla for all high school students in Phelps, Crawford, Dent, Shannon, Carter, Texas and Wright Counties who submitted artwork to the Rolla office as a part of the 2016 Eighth Congressional Artwork Competition. During this recognition ceremony, Congressman Smith will present every student who submitted an entry into the contest at the Rolla office with a certificate of recognition. He will also announce the two “best in show” winners from the Rolla office who will advance to the overall District Art Competition to be juried at the Art Council of Southeast Missouri on May 2nd. An overall “Best of Show” winner will be announced May 4th and will have his or her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. On May 6, the seven runners-up, as well as the overall winner, will be invited to attend a reception at the Art Council of Southeast Missouri from 5:00 to 7:00 PM where Smith will hold a presentation recognizing all eight winners (two from each district office). The Salem Baseball Tigers will host the Willow Springs Bears today at 4:30 at the SHS Baseball Field. Salem enters the game with an 8-7 record and 1-2 in the SCA. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com. The game will also be broadcast of Fidelity Local 6.

The St. Louis Blues will try to close out the first round of the playoffs against Chicago tonight starting at 8:00 on KSMO Radio with the pre-game show. Game time is set for 8:30. The Blues lead the series, 3 games to 1.

Matt Holliday homered, Carlos Martinez threw seven strong innings and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3 on Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep to their NL Central rival. Trevor Rosenthal got his fourth save of the year and 100th of his career by striking out the side in the ninth. The Cards are off today.

Jordan Zimmermann made his third straight scoreless start, Victor Martinez drove in the 1,000th run of his career and the Detroit Tigers held on to beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Wednesday night. The Royals play the Tigers tonight at 6:15.

Funeral services for Dr. Carl Joseph James, Jr. of Rolla, age 92, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the Ozark Hill Memorial Gardens in Rolla.

Funeral services for Richard Rice “Dick” Gardner of Salem, age 82, will be held today at noon at the Salem United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time Thursday. A Graveside service will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Waverly East Cemetery in Waverly, Illinois with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Love Pack-Backpack program. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Memorial services for Jonas Edwin “Ed” Wethy of Salem, age 53, will be held Friday morning at 11:30 at the Round Pond Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to the family of Ed Wethy. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Vadna (Rasor) Stagner of Strafford, formerly of Salem, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from noon until service time on Friday. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Funeral services for Edgar Eugene Perkins of Minneapolis, Minnesota, age 85, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the DentCounty/James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Peggy Cubbage of Springfield, MO, age 74, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the Dent County/James & Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00-7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
