missourinetThe Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night at the city hall council chambers. Alderman Powell was out of town and attended the meeting via video conferencing. The board approved a bid from Premier Pyrotechnics, Inc. for $16,000 to purchase an aerial fireworks display to be held at The Commons on the evening of July 4th. The city has budgeted $8,000 for this expense with the remaining balance still to be raised. With only one bid being received, the board postponed the sale of used electric poles until the poles can be rebid. Jerry Craig reported on the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting that was also held prior to the Alderman meeting. The Commission postponed a decision regarding the in-home business reviewed use permit for 101 N. Warfel Street owned by Midnight Hookers Repossession Services. City Clerk Mary Happel canvassed the certification of election results of the April 5th municipal election and the board approved Resolution NO. 3-2016. Happel then administered the oath of office to Mayor Brad Nash and East Ward Alderman Kim Shelton.  West Ward Alderman Molly Zettel was not in attendance. Mayor Nash postponed reorganizing the Board of Alderman or making any committee appointment until all members are in attendance. City Administrator Ray Walden reported there was an Economic Development Workshop held recently at SBU Campus to create an economic development strategy for the city and county. A finance committee meeting was held last week and another one is being planned after the Capital Improvements meeting that will be held soon. The recipients of the Growth in Rural Ozarks Economic Development Grant will be announced this Friday, April 22nd. The Business Expo will be held on Saturday, April 23rd at the Armory and spring clean-up weeks are May 2nd and May 9th. The Community Wide Yard Sale will be held on May 7th. Walden along with Chris Buckland from Unlimited Play presented a Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant opportunity for $150,000 to build an all-inclusive playground at the city park. The playground would allow all handicapped children to be able to play with other children. The Park Board recommended that $50,000 be contributed to this matching grant with the rest of the funds to be raised over the next two years. The board approved the submission of this grant. The meeting was then adjourned.

At the Salem R-80 Board meeting held last Thursday, school principals gave their reports. At the Upper Elementary, the Tiger Choir received a 1 rating at the Strafford Music Festival on April 8th. The Middle School track season is underway and the boys team took 2nd place and the girls team to 3rd place at the recent Salem Open Middle School Track meet. The Middle School Archery team will be at the NASSP National Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, May 12th and 13th. Irv Johnson placed second at state in his division. For the Salem High School, those receiving a 1 rating at the District Music Contest and advancing to the State Music Festival in Columbia on April 28th and 29th for vocal solo were: Olivia Erway, Nick Hawach, and Natalie Leathers. Also receiving a 1 rating was the Vocal Madrigal Ensemble which is comprised of Sydney Wood, Natalie Leathers, Gabriel Morton and Joshua Sirois; as well as the Vocal Girl’s Ensemble which is made up of Payton Curley, Sydney Wood, Makenna Farrar, Natalie Leathers, Emily Brown, Chelsie Piatt, and Olivia Erway. The Band who also received a 1 rating will be represented by Abby Payne,Joseph Schott, Kristen Pike, Brandon Pike, Laura Benowitz, Hayden Gotchal, Jessica Medley and Jacob Stacy.

Missouri’s annual Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday is going on now and will end April 25th. It’s an opportunity to save money on sales tax for qualifying ENERGY STAR-certified appliances in participating counties and cities. The first $1,500 for the purchase price of each item is exempt from tax. People who purchase new ENERGY STAR qualified appliances during this week will save at least 4.225 percent. The Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday represents an ideal time to buy appliances not only because they will be available at a reduced price, but because they are energy efficient, helping to save on future utility bills. Appliances such as clothes washers, water heaters, dishwashers, air conditioners, furnaces, refrigerators, freezers and heat pumps all qualify for the savings.

Cameron Howard was 3-3, scored three times and drove in three runs to help lead the Salem Tigers to a 9-4 win over St. Clair Tuesday. Jon Arzt and Kory Ramsey each had two hits and two runs scored as the Tigers move to 8-7 on the year. They will host the Willow Springs Bears Thursday in SCA Conference play.

The West Plains Invitational Tennis Tournament scheduled for today has been postponed.

The Salem Golf Team will be at St. James for their tournament starting at 9:00 this morning.

Jason Hammel worked six sharp innings and had both RBIs for the Chicago Cubs in a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.  The Cardinals play the Cubs today at 12:45. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer and had a career-high five RBIs. Yordano Ventura twice escaped bases-loaded jams and the Kansas City Royals beat the Tigers 8-6 on Tuesday night. The Royals play the Tigers tonight at 6:15.

Vladimir Tarasenko scored on a pair of impressive wrist shots. St. Louis Blues beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 on Tuesday night to open a commanding 3-1 lead in their first-round playoff series. The Blues and Blackhawks will playt Thursday night at 8:30 on KSMO Radio in Game 5.

Funeral services for Dr. Carl Joseph James, Jr. of Rolla, age 92, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be tonight from 5:30 to 7:30. Interment will be in the Ozark Hill Memorial Gardens in Rolla.

Funeral services for Richard Rice “Dick” Gardner of Salem, age 82, will be held Thursday at noon at the Salem United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time Thursday. A Graveside service will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Waverly East Cemetery in Waverly, Illinois with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Love Pack-Backpack program. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Memorial services for Jonas Edwin “Ed” Wethy of Salem, age 53, will be held Friday morning at 11:30 at the Round Pond Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to the family of Ed Wethy. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Vadna (Rasor) Stagner of Strafford, formerly of Salem, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from noon until service time on Friday. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

William Gene Pyatt of Salem, age 72 passed away April 14th. There will be no service. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
