missourinetOn Friday morning at 9:20, Dent County Coroner Gina White pronounced 53-year old Jonas Edwin Wethy dead at an accident scene with an autopsy to be completed today by the Boone County Medical Examiner’s Office in Columbia. Mr. Wethy was driving a dump truck for the Dent County Road & Bridge Department on Route B about seven miles east of Highway 19 south, and the vehicle dropped off the side of the road causing the truck to turn on it’s side. When EMS arrived, no signs of life were found. There were no obvious injuries thus making it suspicious that a medical condition occurred before the crash. The Dent County Sheriff’s Office notified the county coroner and the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop I is in charge of the investigation.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their organizational meeting Thursday evening beginning at 5:50. After the certification of the election results, incumbents Bernie Sirois and Dustin Howard were sworn in by Board Secretary Carrie Snider. Superintendent John McColloch presided over the re-election of Bernie Sirois as Board President and Dustin Howard as Vice President. The Board also re-elected Carrie Snider as Secretary and Chris Heavin as Treasurer. The Board then moved into the regular meeting. McColloch gave a health insurance update that included a 10% increase that would occur if they stay with the current provider. Information was then given concerning a possible Dent County Hazard Mitigation Plan and a resolution for support of the plan will be considered at the May meeting. LJ Hart provided information concerning the possible refinancing of the district bonds. Josh Sirois was recognized as a winner of the Dr. Darrell “Jack” Holley MUSIC Scholarship. In the facility update, McColloch reported that the high school roofing project will occur this summer, concrete steps will be built in the front of the high school entrance, and concrete work will be outside the connector between the wings. The Upper Elementary and the High School parking lots will be resealed and Fisher Track will fix the track issue this summer and the district will purchase a new John Deere mower. In old business, an agreement with LJ Hart and Company for underwriting Services was approved by the Board. In new business, the Board approved meal prices for the 2016-2017 school year with a increase of ten cents as mandated, which will be $2.20. They approved to keep the tuition rates for 2016-2017 the same at $7,417.68 per student, and approved the purchase of 140 laptops at a cost of $35,000 using donations from the Judson Young Foundation and the Cox Foundation. Project Graduation had requested the use of buses to take seniors to Rolla and the Board approved the request. The Board approved to adopt the new ELA and Math K-12 curriculum and to adopt a preliminary budget for 2016-2017. A motion to re-establish the Salem R-80 School Foundation Board and bylaws was approved. The Board also approved joining the South Central Education Consortium for their insurance needs at the end of the fiscal year at quite a savings to the district, yet the insurance would still be with United Health Care. The Board accepted the resignation of Clay Moody as golf coach, Charles Schmitt as Upper Elementary physical education teacher, assistant football, assistant basketball; Terri Welch as Middle School physical education teacher and girl’s track; Kim Moser as English/French teacher and High School yearbook; Amanda Parmelee as Middle School Social Studies teacher; and Tammy Sellers as Upper Elementary teacher.
