missourinetThe Dent County Commission met Thursday for their regular meeting. Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock reported there was a protest of taxes by an entity, but nothing has been filed within the 90 day period as required by law. Medlock said the monies would be released this month. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams stated the sales tax distribution from the state just received was $70,974.40 and so far in 2016, there has been an $11,323.31 increase in sales tax revenues. That is a gain of about 4.34%. Last year in April, Dent County received $62,591.75. She also said the Road and Bridge Department sales tax received in April was $31,829.57 and year to date, a total of $122,641.59. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4122, 4124, 4160 and 6220 while materials would be added and grading done to county road 6500. Purcell said materials would also be added to Dent County Roads 4150 and 4155 while brush would be cut on county road 5630. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Roads 3220 and 6130, while grading only would be done on county roads 2340 and 4437. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said all the commissioners and the county clerk attended the Missouri Association of Counties Legislative Conference Monday, and they all attended the Economic Development Workshop at SBU on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Skiles attended the Upper Meramec Watershed meeting at Wurdack Farm and the next meeting will be April 27th at the Meramec State Park in Sullivan. The commissioners took fuel bids for 1,000 gallons of unleaded gas and 7,000 gallons of diesel fuel. The lowest bid was MFA Oil with a price of $1.63.5 per gallon of unleaded fuel, and $1.34.81 for diesel fuel. Sheriff Rick Stallings brought in the quarterly report that showed there were 73 new incarcerations during January where the average inmate count was 46.29, another 96 new incarcerations during February with an average inmate count of 48, and another 71 new incarcerations in March with an average inmate count of 40.81. Stallings said currently there are 16 prisoners that have been housed out. The commissioners also met with representatives from L.J. Hart to discuss financing strategies for a new justice center in Dent County. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The 2016 Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Business Expo will be held on Saturday, April 23rd at 9:00 in the morning until noon at Salem Community Center @ the Armory, located at 1200 West Rolla Road. The Business Expo is an excellent opportunity for businesses to advertise their products and services. The expo is organized by the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Salem Publishing Company and KSMO Radio. The deadline for businesses to ask for a booth space is TODAY. The annual Expo is free to the public. Chamber members receive one booth space (10 foot by 6 foot) at no charge if they want to participate. Additional booth spaces are $40 each. The booth space fee for non-chamber members is $140. There will be food concessions provided by Healthy Dent County during the event. Businesses that plan on giving prizes that are valued at $250 or more are asked to contact the chamber office in order to take full advantage of Expo advertising. The Missouri Conservation Commission has opened a 30-day comment period through May 1st on changes to the Wildlife Code of Missouri that would prohibit the hunting of feral hogs on lands owned, leased, or managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). All Public comments can be submitted by mail to the Missouri Department of Conservation, Regulations Committee, PO Box 180, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102-0180. You can also submit your comments by email to this address: Regulations@mdc.mo.gov, or by going online to mdc.mo.gov. Following final Conservation Commission consideration of citizen input and staff recommendations this summer, the anticipated effective date of the regulation changes will be Sept. 30, 2016. Potential penalties for illegal hog hunting could include fines and the loss of hunting privileges.

The Salem Track teams will be at the Cuba Invitational today starting at 3:00.

The Salem Tennis Tigers defeated Licking Thursday, 9-0 to move to 7-0 on the year. They will hold their make-up match with Rolla today in Rolla at 4:00.

Stetson Welch two out single in the bottom of the 9th inning drove in the winning run as the Houston Tigers beat the Salem Tigers, 5-4. Jon Arzt tied the game in the 7th inning for the second straight game with a two-run homer in the top of the 7th inning, this one an inside the park home run. The Tigers are now 5-5 on the year and they are 1-2 in the SCA.

The Salem Baseball Tigers will hold their baseball tournament starting this afternoon at 4:00 with Licking vs St. James followed by Salem vs Iberia at 6:30. On Saturday, Salem will face St. James at 10:00 in the morning, Licking and Iberia will play at 12:30. Then at 3:00, Iberia and St. James will play with Salem facing Licking Saturday afternoon at 5:30.

Jaime Garcia pitched a one-hitter as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-0 Thursday. Randal Grichuk and Jeremy Hazelbaker hit two-run homers and Garcia finished with two hits himself. The Cards will host Cincinnati tonight at 6:20 with afternoon games Saturday and Sunday at 12:20 on KSMO.

Ian Kennedy threw seven strong innings, Eric Hosmer hit a two-run double during a five-run sixth and the Kansas City Royals beat the Houston Astros 6-2 on Thursday night. The defending World Series champs are 7-2 after winning the final three games of the four-game set with the Astros. The Royals start a three game series with the Athletics tonight at 9:05.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Chicago Blackhawks tonight at 7:00 in Game 2 of their best of seven series. The Blues lead the series, 1-0. The game tonight will NOT be heard on KSMO. Game 3 will be Sunday afternoon at 2:00 and KSMO will stream the game starting at 1:30, then following Cards baseball, air the remainder of the game on KSMO.

Funeral services for Harley Glinn Lovins of Salem, age 83, was held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation was from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Carty Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Full Gospel Church.

Memorial services for Esther E. Walker of Salem, age 79, was held Saturday at the Meramec Hills Cemetery in Cuba at 11:00 in the morning. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County/ James and Gahr Mortuary.

Funeral services for Austin Eugene Gillam of Cuba, age 80, was held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.  Interment will be in the Czar Cemetery in Viburnum. 

Funeral services for Willie Freeman of Black, MO, age 77, was held Sunday at 2:00 at the Black River Baptist Church. Visitation was Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Lesterville. A Masonic Service will be held at 7 PM on Saturday. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Black River Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Loretta Irene Talbert, age 85, will be held Monday at 12:00 PM at the St, James Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Monday from10:00 AM until service time. Interment will be in the Licklider Cemetery.

Funeral services for Roger Keith Kolling of Rolla, age 97, will be held Monday at 2:00 at the Prices Branch Christian Church in High Hill, Missouri with Pastor Richard Veinot officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Prices Branch Cemetery in High Hill. Memorials are suggested to the Ozark Highlands Christian Church or the Prices Brand Christian Church.

Funeral services for Wayne Parker of Bunker will be held Monday at 2:00 PM at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be Sunday at 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Interment will be held at the Westfork Sutterfield Cemetery in Bunker. Memorails are to be made as stuffed animals to give to sick children in hospitals.

Funeral services for Betty M. Schafer of Salem, age 90, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Dr. Carl Joseph James, Jr. of Rolla, age 92, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30. Interment will be in the Ozark Hill Memorial Gardens in Rolla.

William Gene Pyatt of Salem, age 72 passed away April 14th. There will be no service. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
