missourinetAn accident occurred Monday afternoon at 1:30 in Dent County on Highway 19 about eight miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Chrysler Town and Country Van driven by 43-year old Frances McCann of Salem was traveling southbound and ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a culvert and then overturned. McCann suffered moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chrysler Town and Country Van sustained extensive damage and was removed by Whitaker Towing.

The Salem Police Department has submitted reports. On Monday morning, April 4th at 11:43, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 100 block of East Third in reference to utility theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a female suspect ran an extension cord from one residence to the other and turned the water back on after the utilities had been shut off for nonpayment. Later that afternoon at 4:31, an officer received information from the Rolla Police Department of a theft of merchandise valued at $79.99 from Kohl’s. The officer located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on Highway 32 West. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 32 year-old male passenger of Salem who was in possession of the stolen merchandise. He was issued a summons for receiving stolen property with a date to appear in court and was released. On Tuesday night, April 5th at 11:35, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the detention of a 42 year-old female of Newburg for driving while suspended. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Wednesday, April 6th at 12:00 noon, an officer was sent to a residence in the 700 block of East Jack in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a Dell laptop computer valued at $25.00. Southwest Baptist University was approved for continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission, the University’s regional accrediting body, on March 21st. The re- accreditation process includes a self study of continuous improvement and development of an assurance argument based on five criteria that are reviewed by a peer review team that visited the Bolivar campus, as well as SBU campuses in Springfield, Mountain View and Salem, in November. In order to achieve accreditation, an institution must meet strict guidelines and be committed to continuous improvement. This gives assurance that the institution offers quality academic programs. Accreditation also is a federal requirement for the University to administer federal financial aid. SBU has been accredited by HLC since 1957.

On Monday, April 4th, Dent County Sheriff's Department deputies conducted a "knock and talk" in the 600 block of County Road 6200. During a consent search of the residence, the deputies located suspected methamphetamine and methamphetamine paraphernalia. As a result, 34-year old Amanda Holt of Salem was arrested. Holt is currently being held in the Dent County Jail on a $30,000 cash only bond.   This information is just an accusation, and is not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of any charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it is to determine guilt or innocence.

An accident occurred at 3:00 early Tuesday morning in Phelps County on Highway 63 about six miles south of Edgar Springs. According to the highway patrol report, a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 24-year old Dalton Backues of Licking was traveling southbound and traveled off the right side of the roadway. The Silverado then vaulted over Phelps County Road 6330, struck the embankment and overturned. Backues suffered moderate injuries and was transported by personal vehicle to the Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Silverado was totaled and removed from the scene by Lucas Automotive in Edgar Springs.

Intercounty Electric held their annual Youth Tour essay contest for juniors at nine schools districts in the area in February, with the interviews being held in April. The top student selected from their oral interview from each school represented won the grand prize which is a trip for a week to Washington, DC in June. Those delegates included Carson Mowery from Salem, Cabe Grossgrove from Licking, Sam Wilsdorf from Rolla, and Rebecca Pirtle from St. James. The other finalists that didn’t get chosen for the Washington, DC Youth Tour can attend the three-day CYCLE program in Jefferson City in July.. Congratulations goes to all those who participated in the Youth Tour essay contest.

The Salem Golf Team finished in 3rd place Monday at a meet hosted by Licking at Oakwood Golf Club in Houston. Licking won the meet with a 196. Houston shot a 229 and Salem shot a 237. James Swan from Licking was the low round with a 48. Scores for Salem were Keion Owen with a 56, Matt Russell and Alex Harris each shot 59, and Logan Gambill finished with 63. Salem will be at Thayer on Thursday.

The St. Louis Cardinals will host the Milwaukee Brewers tonight starting at 7:15. The pre-game show will be at 6:20 on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Blues will play the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round of the playoffs starting tonight at 8:30. KSMO will stream the game on ksmoradio.com until the Cards baseball game is over, then air the broadcast on KSMO Radio.

Lorenzo Cain hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and the Kansas City Royals held on for a 3-2 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night. Alcides Escobar and Mike Moustakas hit consecutive singles to start the game before Cain connected on a full-count, 91-mph fastball off Mike Fiers (0-1) to make it 3-0. The Royals play the Astros tonight at 7:10.

Memorial services for Brian Keith Beck of Salem, age 49, will be today at 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 3:00 at the Chapel. There will be no interment. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Funeral services for Don Franklin Mowry of Rolla, age 94, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Barnes-Jewish Children’s Cancer Hospital.

Funeral services for Harley Glinn Lovins of Salem, age 83, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Carty Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Full Gospel Church.

Memorial services for Esther E. Walker of Salem, age 79, will be held Saturday at the Meramec Hills Cemetery in Cuba at 11:00 in the morning. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County/ James and Gahr Mortuary.

Funeral services for Austin Eugene Gillam of Cuba, age 80, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Interment will be in the Czar Cemetery in Viburnum.
