missourinetOn Sunday, April 3rd, Dent County Sheriff's Department Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Highway 72 near Route C. The driver, 21-year old Mark Shrewsbury of Salem, was subsequently arrested for driving without a having valid drivers license. Shrewsbury was transported to the Dent County Jail and was later released pending court appearance. On Thursday, April 7th, deputies made contact with Kayla Howard outside of the Dent County Judicial Building. Howard was subsequently arrested for an active arrest warrant out of Phelps County. Howard later posted bond. That same day, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Carty Street near Hunt Street. While making contact with the occupants of the vehicle, Michael Stagner, a passenger in the vehicle, fled on foot. A short foot pursuit ensued before Stagner was taken into the custody by deputies. It was later discovered that Stagner had an active warrant for his arrest. Stagner was transported to the Dent County Jail and was incarcerated on a Capias warrant. On Friday, April 8th, deputies made contact with 27-year old Stephanie Hodges of Salem in the 300 block of East Bryan Street. Hodges was subsequently arrested for an active arrest warrant. Hodges was transported to the Dent County Jail and was incarcerated. 

The Salem Police Department has submitted reports. On Friday, April 1st at 10:50 in the morning, an officer made contact with a 32- year old male from Union, Missouri who had an active arrest warrant from Franklin County. He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending extradition. Then at 1:04 that afternoon an officer was sent to Casey’s General Store on Highway 32 East in reference to the theft of fuel. The investigation of the report revealed that the driver of a red 2006 Jeep Cherokee pumped fuel valued at $30.00 and left without paying. On Saturday, April 2nd, an officer was dispatched to Mobil at the corner of Highway 32-72 and 19 in reference to the theft of fuel. The investigation of the report revealed a male who was approximately 30 to 35 years of age with brown hair, wearing a brown jacket and driving an older white van, pumped fuel valued at $31.42 and left without paying. That night at 9:18, an officer located a 21 year-old male of Salem at a residence in the 300 block of East Roosevelt who had three active arrest warrants from Rolla. He was taken into custody and later released with a new court date after posting a $350.00 bond. The D-A-V Mobile Service Office will be held on Tuesday, April 19th from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM at the Licking Police Department located at 125 South Main Street in Licking.

The City of Salem Finance Committee will be holding a meeting tonight at 6:00 at the Salem Community Center @ The Armory. They will be discussing the 2015-2016 fiscal status of the city and the 2016-2017 budget assumptions. The meeting, called by Alderman Haydn Powell, is open to the public.

Congressman Jason Smith announced that his Rolla district office is accepting entries for the 2016 Congressional Art Competition from high school students in Phelps, Crawford, Dent, Shannon, Carter, Texas and Wright Counties. High school students or high schools in these counties must submit their artwork by appointment only to Congressman Smith’s Rolla district office by 5:00 PM on Tuesday, April 19th. Students may submit original paintings, drawings, collages, mixed media, computer-generated art and photographs. Congressman Smith and a panel of art experts will select a winning work of art to be displayed in the Capitol for one year. During the month of April, each of the four district offices (Cape Girardeau, Farmington, Rolla, West Plains) will collect art pieces from the various high schools encompassed within their areas and display them for all to see. Every student who enters the contest will receive a certificate of recognition. The artwork submitted to each district office will then be juried and a reception will be held in each of the district offices announcing the winners of each district. Artwork submitted to the Rolla office will be displayed starting April 20th, at The Centre in Rolla. The Art Show and Recognition Ceremony for the Rolla office will be held at The Centre on Saturday, April 23rd, from 11:00am- 12:30pm.  Artwork must be dropped off at the Rolla Office by appointment only: and the Rolla Office is located at 830 A S. The Salem Baseball Tigers game with the Ava Bears Monday was postponed due to rain. The game has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 27th at 4:30. Salem will next play Thursday at Houston at 4:30 in SCA Play. Salem enters that game with a 5-4 record and 1-1 in the SCA Conference. The Salem Tigers Tennis team will be at Willow Springs today starting at 4:00.

The Salem Golf Team will play at the Seymore Golf Tournament today starting at 9:00.

The Salem Tracks Teams will host the Salem Invitational Tournament today starting at 3:00.

Michael Wacha allowed four hits in six scoreless innings and the St. Louis Cardinals had 10 extra-base hits Monday in routing the Milwaukee Brewers 10-1 in their home opener. Jeremy Hazelbaker was 4 for 4 with a triple, double and sacrifice fly, lifting his average to .526, and fellow rookie Almedys Diaz had two doubles. Yadier Molina had three hits and two RBIs for the Cards who are off today.

Collin McHugh bounced back from the shortest start of his career by pitching seven scoreless innings and Colby Rasmus hit a two-run homer as the Houston Astros won their home opener over the Kansas City Royals, 8-2, on Monday night. Chris Young (0-2) allowed nine hits and six runs in 4 2/3 innings, the Astros jumped on him early. Kansas City plays the Astros tonight at 7:10.

Memorial services for Brian Keith Beck of Salem, age 49, will be Wednesday at 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 3:00 at the Chapel. There will be no interment. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Funeral services for Don Franklin Mowry of Rolla, age 94, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Barnes-Jewish Children’s Cancer Hospital.

Memorial services for Esther E. Walker of Salem, age 79, will be held Saturday at the Meramec Hills Cemetery in Cuba at 11:00 in the morning. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County/ James and Gahr Mortuary.

Funeral services for Austin Eugene Gillam of Cuba, age 80, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Interment will be in the Czar Cemetery in Viburnum.
