missourinetThe Salem Police Department released their report for the month of March. During the month, they wrote two equipment repair orders, 16 summons to appear in court, three warning tickets, and 19 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated one report of child abuse, 15 accidents, three burglaries, one report of child molestation, three reports of disorderly conduct, three reports of domestic assault, eight reports of domestic violence, one report of driving while intoxicated and/or drugged, one report of driving while intoxicated, five reports of driving while having a license  revoked and/or suspended, two reports of driving while license is expired and/or without a valid license, two reports of failure to obey a lawful order of the police, one report of fraudulent use of a credit and/of debit card, one report of harassment, and three reports of leaving the scene of an accident. The department also investigated one report of a missing person, one report of passing a bad check, one report of possession of an illegal weapon, one report of probation and/or parole violation, four reports of property damage, 15 reports of stealing, and two reports of unlawful use of a weapon. They also investigated three reports of distributing/delivering/manufacturing/producing/possession a controlled substance, two reports of possession of amphetamine, one report of possession of heroin, three reports of possession of marijuana, five reports of possession of drug paraphernalia and two reports of possession of synthetic drugs.  The police department received 1,282 calls for service during the month, handled 119 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 29 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 10 hours in court testifying and four hours as court bailiff. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 8,869 miles and arrested 18 males and 5 females during the month of March.

An accident happened Thursday night at 8:30 on Dent County Road 6370 about 10 miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Chevrolet 1500 driven westbound by 16-year old Morgan Reed of Salem, went off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. Reed suffered minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene. The Chevrolet sustained moderate damages and was removed by the owner. Reed was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The highway patrol was assisted by the Dent County Sheriff’s Department.

The 2016 Business Expo will be held on Saturday, April 23rd at 9:00 AM until noon at Salem Community Center @ the Armory, located at 1200 West Rolla Road. The Business Expo is an excellent opportunity for businesses to advertise their products and services. The expo is organized by the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Salem Publishing Company and KSMO Radio.  The deadline for businesses to have a booth space is Friday, April 15th. Businesses may bring their entry form to the chamber membership luncheon meeting on April 12th to be included in the drawing for the first three spots. The annual Expo is free to the public. Chamber members receive one booth space (10 foot by 6 foot) at no charge. Additional booth spaces are $40 each. The booth space fee for non-chamber members is $140. There will be food concessions provided by Healthy Dent County during the event. Businesses that plan on giving prizes valued at $250 or more are asked to contact the chamber office in order to take full advantage of Expo advertising. The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors conducted their April meeting Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the minutes from the previous meeting the Board reviewed and approved bills, and there was a review of the budget and their calendar of events. During the monthly reimbursement report it was noted that there were a total of 28 calls for the month that included; four calls for structure fires, one call for a flue fire, eight calls for brush fires, five calls for first responders, five calls for vehicle accidents, two calls for mutual aid, two calls for training and one call for a search and rescue. The total calls to date for the year are 96. In old business the District tested a reconditioned auto scrubber. Themachine cost would be $6,500 with pads and supplies. After a discussion, the motion was then made to purchase the auto scrubber and supplies. Fire Chief Brad Nash reported that Fire Fighter school is on track and moving along and that everything is on schedule for everyone to complete on time. The Board then set their next meeting for Tuesday, May 3rd at the fire station beginning at 6:00 PM. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Baseball Tigers game with Ava this afternoon at the SHS Field has been POSTPONED due to rain. It has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 27th at 4:30 as a varsity only game. Salem will next play at Houston Thursday at 4:30 and will go into the game with a 5-4 record and 1-1 in the SCA Conference. 

On a very blustery Thursday last week, the Salem Golf Tigers hosted their golf invitational at the Salem Country Club. Dixon came in first with a 368 followed by Mountain Grove with a 381. Salem was a distant 7th shooting a 445. Keion Owen shot a 100 to lead Salem followed by Logan Gambill with a 108, Matt Russell with a 116 and Alex Harris with a 121. The golf team will be at Seymore on Tuesday.

The Salem Tennis Team will be at Rolla today starting at 4:00. The Tennis Team is 5-0 on the year going into the match.

Brandon Moss and Matt Carpenter each hit three-run homers as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Atlanta Sunday, 12-7 to sweep the series from the Braves. The Cardinals are now 3-3 on the season and they will host Milwaukee today for the Cards home opener. The pre-game show begins at 1:40 today on KSMO Radio.

Speedy pinch runner Terrance Gore streaked home on a wild pitch with two outs in the 10th inning, scoring with a headfirst slide to lift the Kansas City Royals over the winless Minnesota Twins in ten innings Sunday, 4-3. The Royals scored twice in the 9th inning to tie the game. Kansas City is 4-1 on the season.

Alex Ovechkin scored a hat trick and scored his 50th goals for the seventh time in his career as Washington blitzed the Blues Saturday night, 5-1. Vladimir Tarasenko scored his 40th goal of the year for the Blues only score. The Blues will face Chicago in the 1st round of the playoffs.

Funeral services for Lucy Asher of St. James, age 95, will be today at 11:00 at the St. James Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

Memorial services for Brian Keith Beck of Salem, age 49, will be Wednesday at 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 3:00 at the Chapel. There will be no interment. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Funeral services for Don Franklin Mowry of Rolla, age 94, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Barnes-Jewish Children’s Cancer Hospital.
