An accident occurred at 8:42 Wednesday morning in Dent County at the intersection of Routes C and O in Anutt. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan driven by 63-year old Roy Headrick of Salem was traveling eastbound and attempted to cross the highway. At that time, the Dodge struck a northbound 2012 GMC Acadia driven by 35-year old Bethany Thompson of Salem. Headrick suffered minor injuries while a passenger in the Dodge, 63-year old Nancy Headrick suffered moderate injuries. Thompson suffered minor injuries and all were taken by EMS to the Salem Memorial District Hospital in Salem. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge Grand Caravan and the GMC Acadia sustained moderate damage and where both towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

Filing for state and county offices closed Tuesday afternoon at 5:00 and a number of county office holders will be challenged in the August primary and/or in the General Election. County office holders who were not opposed in either the Primary or General Election were all from the Democratic Party. They are Assessor Tine Whitaker, Coroner Gina White and Surveyor Craig Ruble. The Sheriff’s Race is a log jam with incumbent Rick Stallings being challenged by Jeff Brooks in the Democratic Primary, while Bob Wells, Scott L. McFarland and Justin Stites will vie to represent the Republican Party in the General Election. In the District 1 Commissioner race on the Republican side, incumbent Dennis Purcell will be challenged by Nathan Headrick in the Primary while Billy Schafer will represent the Democratic Party in November. Running for the District 2 Commissioner seat will be incumbent Gary Larson being challenged by Travis Fulton in the Republican Primary. The winner in the Primary will face Democrat Gary Howard in General Election. In the race for Public Administrator, incumbent Jim Kotschedoff will be opposed by Sherida Britton-Cook in the Republican primary with no Democratic opposition in the General Election. Looking at the candidates who filed for state offices, incumbent Jason Smith of Salem of Missouri 8th Congressional District for the House of Representatives will have three Republican challengers in the primary. They include Todd Mahn of Desoto, Phillip E. Smith of Gatewood and Hal Brown of Cape Girardeau. The Democratic candidate will be Dave Cowell of Farmington and the Libertarian candidate will be Johnathan Shell of Fredricktown in the General Election. In the State Representative race for the 143rd District, incumbent Jeff Pogue will face challenger Bobby Simpson of Salem in the Republican Primary. The winner of the Primary will be the next State Representative as no other party has a representative for the General Election. Filing for State Senator was Chief Wana Dubie of Salem on the Democratic ticket and he will face three others competing for that position in the Primary, and State Senator Dan Brown from Rolla has thrown his hat in the ring for State Treasurer in the Republican Primary. He will face Eric Schmitt of St. Louis.

The City of Salem Utility Committee will hold a meeting, called by Alderwoman Molly Zettel, on Monday, April 4th at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 6:00 PM. The committee will hold the meeting to consider trailer court, apartment and hotel unit charges, and the Salem Housing Authority agreement. The committee will discuss auditing gallons of water pumped vs gallons billed and auditing electric power purchased vs billed. The committee will then present a summary of the meeting with the Department of Natural Resources and automatic rate increases will also be addressed. The meeting of the Salem Utility Committee is open to the public.

The Salem Baseball Tigers will host the Potosi Trojans today HAS BEEN CANCELLED!

The Salem Tigers Tennis will be at Willow Springs today at 4:00. Salem is 2-0 on the year.

The Salem High School Golf Team hosted its first match of the year on Tuesday at the Spring Creek Golf and Country Club. It was supposed to be a four team match, but due to conflicts only Salem and Licking had enough to participate in the team score. Houston only brought 3 golfers and Cabool only brought 2. Salem and Licking ended up tying for first with a total score of 240. Salem Scores were Keion Owen 46, Matt Russell 62; Alex Harris, Logan Gambill, and Lucas Plumley all had a 66. One of the 66’s is dropped as only the lowest four scores count toward the team total. Salem will be at Mountain Grove this afternoon at 4:00.

Michael Wacha pitched five scoreless innings giving up just two hits and the St. Louis Cardinals shutout the Miami Marlins Wednesday, 3-0. Jordan Walden, Seth Maness and Trevor Rosenthal also pitched for St. Louis as Miami was only able to secure three hits. Matt Holliday drove in two runs for the Cardinals and Yadier Molina had the other RBI for St. Louis who will play the New York Yankees today.

Cole Hamels pitched five solid innings in his final spring start, and the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Wednesday. Royals’ starter Ian Kennedy was led off the field after making warmup tosses in the fourth inning. The preliminary diagnosis was left hamstring tightness. Kennedy, who signed a $70 million, five-year contract in January, was on the disabled list last April with the San Diego Padres with a left hamstring injury. The Royals have the day off today.

Funeral services for Mary Ellen Taber of St. James, age 81, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the St. James Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude’s Hospital.

Funeral services for Erma Jean “Jeanie” Pryor of Boss, age 64, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 in the morning until service time Friday. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Celebration of Life service for Ray Thompson of Salem, age 83, will be held Saturday, April 2nd at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be at a later date. Memorials may be given to the PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) Foundation.

Memorial services for Kenny D. Mansfield of Salem, age 55, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Fox Funeral Home Chapel in Licking. All of the arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

Funeral services for Lt. Col. (Ret.) William “Bill” T. Archer of Sligo, age 83, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelvillle. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time Saturday. Interment will be in the Sligo Cemetery will Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.
