An accident occurred in Dent County Friday morning at 10:45 on Dent County Road 5410 about seven miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 International 7400 trash truck driven by 29-year old Troy McBee of Salem was traveling northbound on county road 5410. The trash truck was backing up into a private drive and struck 11-year old James Richardson of Salem who was standing in the roadway. Richardson suffered serious injuries and was transported by Air ambulance to St. Louis Children’s Hospital. McBee was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The trash truck sustained no damage and was driven from the scene by McBee.

An accident occurred at 10:55 Friday morning in Phelps County on Highway 8 about six miles south of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Chevrolet pickup driven by 32-year old Jessica Pickard-Hunt of Steelville was traveling west on Highway 8. The Chevrolet crossed the centerline and ran off the left side of the roadway. The Chevrolet returned to the roadway and traveled across the centerline and off the right side of the roadway. The Chevrolet struck a rock bluff and then began backing into the roadway striking the towed unit of a 2006 International truck and trailer driven by David Long of Argyle that was traveling east on Highway 8. Pickard-Hunt suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the St. James ambulance district. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet pickup sustained extensive damage and was towed by Spurgeon’s Towing. The International truck and trailer sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.

The Salem Police Department released a number of their reports. On Saturday, March 12th at 7:10 at night, an officer was sent to Wal-Mart in reference to a panhandler near the front entrance of the store. The investigation of the report revealed the panhandler, a 39-year old male of Salem, had an active fugitive arrest warrant from Monataw County, Missouri. He was taken into custody on the warrant and was incarcerated pending extradition. On Sunday night, March 13th at 6:07, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 800 block of East Hunt in reference to a domestic disturbance.  The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 47-year old Salem male for possession of marijuana and a 36-year old Salem female for possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were issued summonses to appear in court and were released. Later that same night at 8:17, an officer was detailed to Park and Highway 32 in reference to a suspicious person lying on the side walk. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 47-year old male of Scott City, Missouri for disorderly conduct.  The man was found intoxicated was incarcerated on a 12-hour hold and was issued a summons to appear in court. On Monday, March 14th at 9:00 at night, an officer was detailed to the 1300 block of South Gertrude in reference to a male banging on doors and yelling. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 36-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct and failure to obey a lawful order of a police officer. The male, who was intoxicated at the time, was taken to the Dent County Jail and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. He was issued summonses to appear in court. Later that night at 11:21, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the detention of a 21-year old Salem male for driving while license expired, speeding and fail to register motor vehicle. He was issued summonses to appear in court and released. On Tuesday, March 15th at 4:09 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of an 18-year old Salem male for possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while revoked. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants.

U.S. Air Force Airman Cody L. Lewis graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Lewis earned distinction as an honor graduate. Lewis is the son of Rebecca Wood, step-son of Jason Wood, and the grandson of Eva and Herbert Lewis, and Larry Morrison, all of Salem. He is a 2015 graduate of Salem Senior High School in Salem.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages Missourians to celebrate the value of Missouri trees and forests during Arbor Days in April by planting native trees and practicing proper tree care. Missouri Arbor Day is Friday, April 1. Missouri has been observing the state’s official Arbor Day on the first Friday in April since 1886 when the General Assembly declared that day be set aside for the appreciation and planting of trees. National Arbor Day is recognized on the last Friday of April, which is April 29 for 2016. After losing the first two games of the Houston Tournament, the Salem Baseball Tigers earned a 5-3 win over Houston Thursday as Cody Manthey pitched five innings of no-hit ball with Nate Bray, Gabe Chang and Logan Conway each getting two hits. Then on Friday, Jon Arzt twirled a seven inning four-hitter as Salem beat Cuba, 4-0. Salem only had three hits in the game but got RBI’s from Kory Ramsey, Jon Arzt and Cody Manthey. Salem is 2-2 on the year and they will be in Licking Tuesday afternoon at 4:30. You can hear that game on KSMO Radio starting at 4:10 with Tiger Talk and Coach Phillip Karr.

The Salem Tiger Tennis Team will open their season today at home against Richland starting at 4:00.

Brian Elliott made 15 saves for his third straight shutout and the St. Louis Blues beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 on Friday night to clinch a playoff spot. Robbi Fabri had a goal and an assist to lead the Blues. Then Saturday night, Jake Allen made 32 saves in his return to the lineup as the St. Louis Blues beat the NHL-leading Washington Capitals 4-0 on Saturday night for their fourth consecutive shutout. Kyle Brodziak, Colton Parayko, Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrik Berglund scored for the Blues who will play Colorado tomorrow night.

The St. Louis Cardinals lost to Washington Saturday by the score of 7-0 and then to Miami Sunday by the score of 4-2. They will play the NY Mets today.

The Kansas City Royals Beat Oakland Saturday, 5-2 then lost to The A’s Sunday, 10-1. They will face the San Diego Padres today as Spring Training winds down.

Celebration of Life service for David Lee Clark of Salem, age 66, will be held today at 12:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Vineyard Church in Rolla.
