The City of Salem Board of Alderman held their meeting Monday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. At the last meeting, the Board of Alderman had requested bids for a split load of utility poles that consisted of 19 30-foot poles and 19 40-foot poles. The Board approved the only bid that was received from Bridgewell Resources from Dirks, Arkansas for 19 30-foot poles for $3,490.30 and 19 40-foot poles for $5,966.00 for a total of $9,456.30. This was a budgeted item. In unfinished business, at the last meeting, the Board of Alderman wanted assurances from whichever company installed a faulty soft starter for well #2, that the soft starter would correct the problem with the well. Two bids were received, but Cogent was the only company that would guarantee it would work on well #2. Water and Sewer Department Superintendent Jack Emory recommended going with Cogent and the Board approved the bill for $4,119.76. Also in unfinished business, at the last Board of Alderman meeting, Sherry Lea and Kim Shelton from the Salem Community Center @ the Armory were in and had asked the City of Salem to allow alcohol at special events, using a “Picnic License.” The insurance company for the City was contacted and City Clerk Mary Happel had spoke with a representative verbally, but City Attorney William Seay felt it would be best if there was an e-mail or at least something in writing, that could be tweaked if necessary and he wished to talk with Sherry Lea and Kim Shelton and then bring the issue back before the Board at their next meeting. The Board postponed the item until their next meeting. City Administrator Ray Walden updated the Board on various meetings coming up and Mayor Tune informed the Board that the $100,000 grant from the Committee Foundation of the Ozarks, which has been applied for, was only possible because the City had not filled the Economic Developer position. During new and miscellaneous business, the Board of Alderman voted to give written notification by April 1, 2016 to Midwest Public Risk (MPR), as the Board will put out for bids for property, liability and workers comp insurance for the City of Salem. The Board approved the request from Waste Corp to hold Spring Clean-Up the weeks of May 2nd and May 9th. The Board then approved Electric Superintendent Bryon Johns request for transformers sent out for repair for the cost of $6,298.00. This is a budgeted item. The Board a portion of the utility policy to change the cut-off date from the 28th to the following month on the 6th. The Board then voted to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and contracts.
