The 100-Acre in the Woods Road Rally was held this past weekend in Crawford, Washington and Dent County with Travis Pastrana and his co-driver Christian Edstrom taking first place. The 2015 100-Acre in the Woods winner David Higgins and his co-driver Craig Drew took second place with Lauchlin O'Sullivan and co-driver Scott Putnam taking third place. A nice collection of spectators watched the race at the three spectator locations in Dent County on Saturday as well as visiting the service stops out at The Commons.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held a special meeting prior to their regular meeting Thursday night. L.J. Hart and Company presented information concerning possible refinancing of the Series 2013 General Obligation Bonds to save the district on interest. Hart explained the school could save on interest costs by refinancing now, of in December of 2016 or in December of 2017. A decision will be made a later date regarding possible refinancing. The board then opened the regular meeting and Middle School Principal Scott Roberts introduced students who competed this past weekend at the State Archery Competition. Superintendent John McCulloch said summer school would start on May 31st and run for 14 days. The summer program will be for enrichment for students in Kindergarten through the 6th grade while for those students in 7th through 12th grade who qualify, the time will be used for credit recovery. McCulloch also discussed with the board some different options for health insurance next year and will have more at the April meeting. McCulloch discussed work that needs to be done at the school this summer and it included adding concrete steps in front of the high school office entrance, adding additional lighting in front of the high school, building an enclosed entry into William Lynch and sealing the Upper Elementary and High School parking lots. McCulloch updated the board on the current budget numbers and the school looks to be ahead of last year by about $200,000. Assistant Superintendent John Smith updated the board on ACT tests, MAP tests and the new work keys assessments. The building principals then gave reports. Elementary School Principal Kriste Crocker stated preschool registration will be held on March 23 and 24.  Parents interested in the program should call William Lynch Office at 729-6611 for an appointment. Children that will be three by August 1, 2016 are eligible for preschool. Salem Upper Elementary Principal Melanie Widsom stated the Dent County 4th/5th grade Quiz Bowl tournament was held on March 8th. They had two mixed teams of 4th/5th graders to represent Salem. Team A took 1st and Team B took 2nd and it came down to a double elimination. Middle School Principal Scott Roberts gave his report and then High School Assistant Principal Clay Moody said ACT tests for all juniors will be administered April 19, 2016 during the school day. He also said Pre-Registration for incoming 9th-12th Graders for the 2016-2017 school year will be completed Friday, March 18. The board approved setting the organizational meeting date for April 14th at 5:45 and move the regular April Board meeting from April 21st to April 14th at 6:00 pm at the District Administrative Offices. They also approved MSBA Policy Service Agreement, approved doing roof repairs on the Band Room roof and doing a complete roof tear down and putting on a replacement roof at the southwest corner of the high school by Styles Roofing for a bid of $247,000. The board also approve the resignations of JoAnna Muller who is a high school English teacher; Kendra Crocker who is a William Lynch speech implementer; and Chris Kamprath as a coach for middle school football. The board then went into closed session where they hired a number of probationary teachers and also special service and coaching positions for all sports. The meeting was then adjourned.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 PM. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Salem Baseball Tigers open their season today in the Houston Tournament against Mountain Grove starting at 6:30.

The Salem Track Team will participate in the Rolla Open today starting at 3:30.

Brian Elliott made 19 saves and the St. Louis Blues handed the Vancouver Canucks their second straight shutout loss, 3-0 on Saturday night. Troy Brouwer, Vladimir Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz scored for the Blues who will be at San Jose Tuesday night at 9:00 on KSMO.

The Florida Marlins scored twice in the 8th inning and once more in the 9th to beat the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday, 5-2. Matt Carpenter had two hits including a home run. The Red Birds will face the Boston Red Sox today.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced they have signed free agent shortstop Ruben Tejada to a one-year deal for the 2016 season.

The Chicago Cubs scored four runs in the fifth inning and cruised to a 5-2 win over the Kansas City Royals Sunday. Jon Lester pitched five innings for the Cubs giving up one run on five hits. The Royals will be off today.

Funeral services for Jack E. Turnbough of Davisville, age 69, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Czar Cemetery.

Funeral services for Reverend Bud Sanders of Steelville, age 90, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Golden Echoes of Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board at the Steelville Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Sandra Kay Powell of Salem, age 65 will be held Tuesday, March 22nd at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Scenic Rivers Industries-Sheltered Workshop.

Funeral services for Louise Ritter Mathes of Bunker, age 65, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be held at 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Bunker Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Reynolds County Sheltered Workshop Employee Fund.

Funeral services for Lois M. Carter of Salem, age 68, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary/ Dent County Chapel. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Little Prairie Bible Camp.

Funeral services for Alice May Hagan of Salem, age 78, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Corinth Baptist Church.
