The City of Salem will be testing their Tornado sirens this afternoon at 1:30 in conjunction with the State Wide Tornado Drill as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week that was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was postponed due to adverse weather in northern Missouri.

The Salem Police Department released a report involving a shoplifter. On Monday, March 14th at 3:52 in the afternoon, an Officer was contacted by Wal-Mart's Asset Protection about a female shoplifter. The officer was advised by the Asset Protection Associate that the female had opened several packages and concealed them on her person before leaving the store without paying for the merchandise. The officer was told that she got into a blue Pontiac Grand Prix and left the lot. The vehicle was located by an officer traveling east on Highway 32 near McArthur Avenue after it had left the parking lot. The vehicle was stopped near the entrance of the parking lot of Sears and Parts Tec on Highway 32 East. After a search of the vehicle, officers located all of the merchandise that was reported stolen from Wal-Mart. Officers also found several glass pipes used to smoke methamphetamine, numerous small plastic baggies containing methamphetamine, plastic baggies containing marijuana, a pint jar containing marijuana, a bag with 1.1 ounce of methamphetamine, a loaded 9 mm pistol and numerous items of drug paraphernalia. The driver of the vehicle, a 32-year old male of Bunker, was arrested and issued a summons for driving while suspended. The passenger of the vehicle, 38-year old Jeanetta Landrigan of Bunker, was found to be in possession of all of the contraband located inside of the vehicle and placed under arrest. Landrigan was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of synthetic narcotics, unlawful use of a weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia and shoplifting. Landrigan was incarcerated and is currently being held in the Dent County Jail on $100,000 cash bond.

An accident occurred Tuesday night in Dent County at 9:20 on Dent County Road 4080 about four miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Ford F450 driven by 23-year old Kyle Miller of Salem was traveling northbound and swerved to miss a deer in the roadway. The Ford ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Miller suffered minor injuries and was transported by private conveyance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Passengers in the Ford, 20-year old Breahnna Ellerman and 2-year old Ayvah Ellerman of Salem all suffered minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford F450 sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their March meeting tonight at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning with a presentation by L.J. Hart with information on the debt service fund at 5:30 followed by the regular meeting starting at 6:00 PM. After approval of the agenda and consent agenda will be communications followed by Superintendent John McColloch’s report. In his report, McColloch will address the Board about the Middle School Archery, Summer School for 2016 and give a health insurance update. He will discuss the facilities, give a budget update and an assessment update. Principals from the respective buildings will give their reports regarding events and happenings at each school. In new business, the Board will then set an organizational meeting date and then approve the MSBA policy service agreement and address resignations. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The March meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public. 

The 100-Acre Wood Road Rally is back with 68 entries expected to participate in the race this year including fan favorite Travis Pastrana and last year's winner Dave Higgins. The rally will begin Friday morning in Steelville at 11:30 at the Steelville City Park with the Parc Expose. The actual racing starts at 1:30 and there are four spectator locations for the rally on Friday in Crawford and Washington County. Vehicle service will be conducted at the Steelville Middle School between 4:30-6:20. The last stage on Friday will end at approximately 8:00 in Steelville. On Saturday morning, the Parc Expose and opening ceremony will start at 8:30 with the rally beginning at 10:00 on 4th Street in downtown Salem. There are three spectator points for the Saturday race legs in Dent County. There will be two service sessions at The Dent County Commons: the first from 12:15-2:10; and the second from 3:55-5:50 The rally is expected to finish between 7:30 and 8:30 on Fourth Street in downtown Salem. An awards ceremony will then be held at about 9:30 at the Commons with a party following. The public is invited to join in the festivities, see the cars up close and meet the teams at the Parc Expose each day. Spectators are also welcome at the service sessions at the Steelville Middle School Friday and The Commons Saturday. There is no admission charge for any of these events. The Salem Community Garden workshop will be held Tuesday, March 22nd at 6:00 p.m. at the community garden (801 Highway 32 behind the Methodist Church) for a seed starting workshop. The first 25 people at the workshop will receive a starter plant to take home to their gardens. Master Gardener Larry Galloway will lead the workshop. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Mark Letestu each scored twice and the Edmonton Oilers defeated the St. Louis Blues 6-4 on Wednesday night. David Backes scored twice, and Jaden Schwartz and Patrik Berglund also had goals for the Blues. The Blues play the Vancouver Canucks Saturday night at 9:00 starting with the pregame show on KSMO at 8:30.

Carlos Peguero hit a pinch hit home run in the top of the 9th inning to tie the game and the Cardinals and Atlanta Braves elected to end the contest an 8-8 tie Wednesday. Jedd Gyorko had two hits and two RBI as did Jonathan Rodriguez for St. Louis who will play Detroit today.

The Kansas City Royals banged out 16 hits en route to a 10-0 win over the Chicago Cubs yesterday. Reymond Fuentes had a homer and four RBI in the game, and Dusty Coleman hit a two-run homer for the Royals. Kansas City will play the Los Angeles Dodgers today.

Funeral services for Reverend Bud Sanders of Steelville, age 90, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 Monday. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Golden Echoes of Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board at the Steelville Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Sandra Kay Powell of Salem, age 65 will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Scenic Rivers Industries-Sheltered Workshop.
