A Presidential Preference Primary was held in Dent County yesterday with 4,096 ballots cast which comes to almost 45% of registered voters. The unofficial results in Dent County showed a total of 3,281 people voting on the Republican ticket with 807 people voting on the Democratic ticket, six people voting on the Libertarian party and two people voted on the Constitution Party ticket. In Dent County, Bernie Sanders captured 449 votes which came to 55.64% to Hilary Clinton’s 327 votes that captured 40.52% of the voters on the Democratic Party ticket. For the Republican Party in Dent County, Donald Trump secured 51.45% of the voters getting 1,688 votes while Ted Cruz was able to collect 1,198 votes for 36.51% of the voters. John Kaisch came in 3rd with 168 votes and Marco Rubio was 4th with 139 votes. For the Libertarian Party, Austin Peterson received 3 of the six votes cast with the other three non-committed. The votes for the Constitution Party were both uncommitted. Statewide, Donald Trump narrowly beat Ted Cruz, 382,093 votes to 380,367 votes; Hilary Clinton edged Bernie Sanders by less than 1,700 votes getting 310,602 votes to Sanders 309,071; and Austin Peterson beat Steve Kerbel with 851 votes to Kerbel’s 401.

The Salem Police Department released their updated report concerning an incident that occurred in the 800 block of Hawkins Street in Salem on Friday, January 29th. A consent search of the residence of Courtni Clark of Salem resulted in heroin and drug paraphernalia being located and Clark was placed under arrest and incarcerated pending the application for warrants. During a follow up interview with Clark on Sunday, January 31st, it became apparent that Clark did not tell the truth about the events that took place on the 29th. Clark admitted that she distributed heroin to 52-year old William Guy Phillips, Jr. of Salem, who shortly after collapsed on her porch. Phillips was administered CPR, transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital and later died. An autopsy was ordered from the Boone County Medical Examiners Office in Columbia. Further investigation into the incident was conducted by officers of the Salem Police Department and once the autopsy revealed the cause of death, a probable cause statement requesting the charge of murder in the 2nd degree was filed with the Prosecutors Office against Clark. She is currently being held at the Dent County Sheriff’s Jail with a bond in the amount of $250,000 cash only.

Meramec Regional Community Foundation (MRCF) awarded the University of Missouri Extension, Dent County, a $250 grant March 2nd. The group applied for the grant to expand school gardens at Green Forest R-II Elementary School in Dent County to help elementary students learn hands-on about vegetables. MRCF awarded six grants totaling $1,500 with the goal of enhancing and building stronger communities in the region. MRCF is an outgrowth of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) and is an affiliate of Community Foundation of the Ozarks (CFO) in Springfield. The regional affiliate was formed in 2010. Its 12-member board includes representation from each of the eight Meramec counties and from MRPC.  Currently, MRCF has 48 funds totaling nearly $650,000.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a traffic violation, assault, shoplifters and a burglary. On Sunday morning, February 28th at 1:23, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 27-year old male of Salem for driving while being intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. Later that afternoon at 3:30 p.m. an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1800 block of South Oak reference an assault. The investigation of the report revealed a 32- year old male of Licking, had assaulted a 59- year old female of Salem, causing minor injuries. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Monday afternoon, February 29th at 5:46, an officer was sent to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 32 year-old male of Salem for stealing merchandise. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On the morning of March 2nd at 8:00, an officer transported a 27-year old female of Kennedy, Alabama from Pulaski County to Dent County Jail in lieu of an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. That afternoon at 2:05, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 34-year old male and a 45-year old female both of Salem, Missouri for stealing merchandise. The two suspects were issued summonses to appear in court and were released. That same evening at 7:32, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a burglary. The investigation of the report revealed a person or persons unknown entered a residence in the 600 block of West Gibbs by force, took items as well as cash valued at $316.00 and caused damages valued at $300.00. The Salem Community Garden workshop will be held Tuesday, March 22nd at 6:00 p.m. at the community garden (801 Highway 32 behind the Methodist Church) for a seed starting workshop. The first 25 people at the workshop will receive a starter plant to take home to their gardens. Master Gardener Larry Galloway will lead the workshop. Three Salem Tiger Boys were named to the Class 4, District 10 All District team. Kobe Mead was named to the All District 1st Team while Antonio Quick and Logan Woolf were named to the Honorable Mention Team. Congratulations Tigers!!! Last week, Lady Tigers Payton Curley and Baylee Bilyou were named to the All-District.

The St. Louis Blues will be in Edmonton to face the Oilers starting at 8:00 on KSMO with the pre-game show. The Blues are 1-1 on this five- game road trip.

The only thing bigger than the Winter Classic might be the overwhelming demand for its tickets. Less than 15 hours after announcing that Busch Stadium would play host to the 2017 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic for a match up between the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks, more than 25,000 fans have registered through stlouisblues.com to be notified when tickets become available.

The Cardinals were off Tuesday and will play Atlanta today. The Cardinals are 7-5 with one tie going into the game today. Jaime Garcia is scheduled to start for the Red Birds.

Alcides Escobar doubled, scored and drove in a run in the Kansas City Royals' 4-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Omar Infante had two hits for the Royals who lost the game after the Reds scored two seventh-inning runs off Danny Duffy. The Royals will face the Chicago Cubs today. Chris Young will get the start for Kansas City.

Funeral services for Sandra Kay Powell of Salem, age 65 will be held Tuesday, March 22nd at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Scenic Rivers Industries-Sheltered Workshop.
