The Dent County Commission voted Monday to terminate the contract with Goldberg Group Associates for architectural and engineering services on the jail and justice center for Dent County. The Dent County Commission remains committed to meeting the jail and judicial needs of the county and will be discussing those issues with other architect and engineering firms in the near future.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. Randy League form the Midwest Blue Oval Club was in to request use of the Courthouse Lawn for the Club Show September 10th. League said that the show is open to all makes of automobiles and all proceeds stay locally. He went on to say that in many communities restored farm tractors have become a successful part of the shows and would like to see some at the Salem show. For more information, League can be contacted at (816) 719-5157. The Commissioners approved his request 3-0. In the road report, District I Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that materials would be added to and grading done on Dent County Road 5600, commonly called the Turtle Loop, as work on the Title II Project continues. He said grading would be done on county roads 2470 and 6420, while brush would be cut on county road 2400. Purcell said that weather permitting, work would start on the Cedar Grove Gravel Removal Project with the National Park Service. He said that approximately 30 truckloads would be removed and applied to county roads in the area. District II Commissioner Gary Larson indicated materials would be added to and grading done on Dent County Road 4060, while grading only would be done on county roads 4380 and 2210. He said brush would be cut on county roads 3080, 3120, and 3125. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said on Tuesday he would be attending the Meramec Community Enhancement Corporation meeting in St. James. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that her office would be open Saturday from 8:00 am until noon for absentee voting and that anyone having questions about where they were to vote in next Tuesday’s Presidential Preference Primary should call her office at 729-4144. She went on to say that anyone with an address or name change would need to come by her office to sign the appropriate paper work. Curley added payroll was being done and the Commissioners reviewed the delinquent personal property and real estate books. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 in the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Sheriff's Department has releases a number of reports. On February 17th, deputies conducted a traffic stop at the Casey’s General Store on Highway 32. As a result, 34-year old Steven Taylor of Salem was arrested for operating a motor vehicle without a valid license. Taylor was released with a summons to appear in court. Then on February 20th, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Center Street near Warfel Street. As a result of the stop, 25-year old Buck Prater of Salem was arrested for driving while having his license revoked, a 1st offense. Prater was released with a summons to appear in court. On March 1st, deputies responded to Lincoln Avenue in Bunker for a suicidal male. It was discovered that a male subject had taken a shotgun into a bathroom and threatened to kill himself. Upon arrival, deputies were able to take the male subject into custody without incident. He was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for evaluation. On March 3rd, deputies responded to the 2000 block of County Road 5240 for a report of a burglary. The deputies discovered that a motor home had several items taken from it. Those items include game cameras, BBQ grill, space heater, laptop computer, and miscellaneous tools. The investigation is ongoing. On March 4th, deputies responded to a call to Dent County Road 6280 for a report of a suspicious vehicle parked along the road.  Upon arrival, deputies observed 26-year old Dustin Norris of Salem was sitting in the backseat of the vehicle. A consent search of the vehicle and person resulted in deputies finding syringes and a spoon. The items field tested positive for methamphetamine and heroin. Norris was taken to the Dent County Jail and is currently being held on a $25,000 cash only bond.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a shoplifter, traffic accident, trespassing, and traffic violations. On Thursday, February 25th at 12:12 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 21-year old female of Salem for stealing merchandise valued at $86.93. She was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. That afternoon at 2:10, an officer was dispatched to a traffic accident. During the investigation, it was found that one of the drivers, a 51-year old female of Salem, had an active arrest warrant from the State Probation and Parole. She was taken into custody on the warrant and later released with a new court date after posting bond. That same evening at 7:24, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 100 block of North Park in reference to trespassing. During the investigation, the officer found that the city utilities electric meter had been tampered with in order to provide electric after having been shut off. The report is under investigation. Later that night at 10:33, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 25-year old female of Salem for possession of marijuana. She was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Saturday, February 17th at 1:51 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of a 32-year old male of Salem for possession of marijuana. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Stephen Piscotty, Jonathan Rodriguez and Jedd Gyorko each had a single, double and drove in two runs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets, 9-4 Monday afternoon in Jupiter. The Cards scored five runs in the 5th inning to seal the win. The Card and Mets are now both 3-2 in pre-season play. The Cardinals will host the Minnesota Twins today in Florida.

Eric Hosmer hit a two run single in the 6th inning and the Kansas City Royals Split Squad held on to beat the Chicago Cubs Monday by the score of 3-2. In the other split squad game, the Royals lost to the Oakland A’s by the score of 6-4. The Royals are now 2-5 in the spring while the Cubs are 1-5. The Royals will face the Colorado Rockies today at 3:00 in Arizona.

The Salem High School Winter Sports banquet will be held Thursday night at 6:30 at the Salem High School Cafeteria. The banquet will salute the boys and girls basketball teams as well as the cheerleaders.
