The 65th Annual Miss Salem Pageant and Variety Show, hosted by the Cosmopolitan Club, was held Saturday night at the City Hall Auditorium in front of a nice crowd. Lyndsey Parker sponsored by the Bank of Salem was crowned the 2016 Miss Salem by Natalie Leathers. The 1st Runner-Up went to Breanna Piatt sponsored by Dr. Yvonne Prince and the 2nd Runner-Up went to Abby Schafer sponsored by Pizza Inn. The Miss Personality Award was given to Haley Murr who was sponsored by Sonic Drive-In. The Cosmopolitan Club wants to thank all the girls who participated in the contest and also all those who attended.

At the Dent County Commissioner's meeting Thursday, Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that the External Relations Committee  at the MRPC has set October 20th for the annual awards banquet and he said site solicitations will be sent out. At the MRPC Advisory Committee meeting, MRPC Mobility Manager Holly Kreinkamp reported that Enterprise Rental has a carpooling program available that could be very useful for workers carpooling to work sites. Sheriff Rick Stallings and Deputy Roderman came in to discuss the E911 system bids that had been previously opened. After some discussion, Deputy Roderman recommended to go with Centurylink for a one time fee and total cost of $118,949.24 for the equipment, software and recording device, and after the first year, there would be a yearly maintenance cost of $10,128.61. This was the lowest bid on the equipment. Commissioner Gary Larson made a motion to accept their recommendation to go with the total package from Centurylink and pursue financing options. Commissioner Dennis Purcell seconded and all agreed 3-0 on the issue. After going into closed session for an hour, the commissioners heard from Mark Honea who came in to discuss his property boundary lines on Dent County Road 5120 and how he is having problems with WCA who is using his property as a turnaround. He discussed his issue with Prosecutor Andrew Curley, who was present for this part of the meeting. Curley and Commissioner Purcell will go look at the road and his property lines. The commission discussed two State bid dump trucks that the county would like to buy. The 2016 MAC trucks are from Vanguard Truck Center of St. Louis. They come with spreader boxes and snow plows, and the cost is $163,830.50 each. The commission agreed 3-0 to purchase the two trucks. They will seek bids on lease purchase financing at a later time. The meeting was then adjourned.

The City of Salem Planning & Zoning Board will conduct a meeting tonight, called by Jerry Craig, President of the Board, at the City Hall Council Chambers, located at 202 North Washington beginning at 6:30 PM. The Board will address a request for an in-home business at 101 North Warfel, owned by the Midnight Hookers Repossession Services, LLC. The City of Salem Board of Alderman will then conduct their meeting beginning at 7:00 PM. During the hearing of persons, Randy League with the Midwest Blue Oval Club is requesting permission to close the streets around the courthouse square and 4th Street, from Main Street to Washington Street, for the Midwest Blue Oval Club and Current River Rally with a proposed date of September 10th. Kim Shelton and Sherry Lea with Healthy Dent County would like to discuss seeking approval to allow a “picnic license” to be obtained for certain event held at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory and John Stagner, representing Legal Shield, would like to present to the Board a program for the City employees concerning an identity theft program that his company offers. In bids, the City requested bids for interest rates on a lease/purchase agreement for a 2016 Ford R-150 for $26,120 and a 2016 Ford Explorer for $26,210. Three bids were received and will be presented to the Board and with their motion to approve the awarded bank that they also include authorization for the Mayor to sign the agreement. Also during bids, the City requested bids for replacing the faulty Soft Starter for Well #2 and two bids will be presented to the Board and Park Director Tye Lydon requested quotes for 42” picket rail ADA compliant around concrete slab and 42” picket ADA compliant wheel chair ramp railing. Only one bid was received and will be presented to the Board. Keith Inman, Vice Chairman of the Planning & Zoning Commission will report on the their meeting held prior to the Board of Alderman meeting, Alderwoman Molly Zettel will report on the Utility Committee meeting held March 7th and Tye Lydon, Parks & Recreation Director wishes to discuss the adult basketball program. City Administrator Ray Walden will report on happenings, current issues and an Economic Development Grant, followed by a report by Mayor J.J. Tune. During the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions, Bill #3311, an ordinance to adopt a video conference meeting policy for the Board of Alderman will be presented and resolution #2-2016, a resolution authorizing and required to enable the City to apply for a grant through DNR for help with engineering fees at the Waste Water Treatment Facility will be presented to the Board. In new and miscellaneous business, Superintendent Emory will present two bills for the Board’s approval for over $3,000 for items used in the replacement of 2” water line with 6” water lines. The meeting of the City of Salem Planning & Zoning Commission and the City of Salem Board of Alderman are open to the public.

If you haven’t filed your taxes yet and need some help, volunteers from the AARP are still taking appointments at the Salem Community Center@The Armory. This free tax filing assistance will continue every Friday through April 8th. Appointments MUST be made by calling 729-8163 and they are still being taken for March 18th through April 8th. The Salem Community Center is located at 1200 West Rolla Road. Remember you will need to bring with you your pertinent tax information including Forms W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc, 1099-INT and 1099-DIV. A copy of last years state and federal returns would be helpful and you will need proof of bank routing numbers such as a check or deposit slip for Direct Deposit.

The City of Salem Youth Soccer league signups will be held TODAY at the Salem Administrative Office at 4th and Iron Streets for boys and girls from ages 4-12. The cost is $20 per player and the league will be held from April 2nd through May 7 at the Al Brown Fields. For more information, call Salem Parks and Recreation Director Tye Lydon at 729-6290.

In preseason play, the Cardinals beat Miami Saturday by the score of 3-2 on a two-run double by Anthony Garcia in the 8th inning before dropping a 5-2 decision to the Washington Nationals on Sunday. The Cardinals will face the New York Mets today at noon.

The Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals on Saturday, 7-6 before the Royals handed the Anaheim Angels a 6-1 beating on Sunday. The Royals will face the Oakland A’s today.

Jori Lehtera scored in his return to the lineup and the St. Louis Blues held on to beat the Minnesota Wild 4-2 on Sunday night. Ryan Reaves, Patrik Berglund and Robby Fabbri also scored for St. Louis, which won its third straight. The Blues have victories in seven of their past eight road games. The Blues play the Blackhawks Wednesday at 7 p.m. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 6:30.

Funeral services for Mr. Bob Peterson of Licking, age 60, will be today at 1:00 P.M. at Fox Funeral Home Chapel in Licking. Visitation will be today from 11:00 until service time at Fox Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Licking Cemetery.
