An accident occurred at 6:00 Tuesday evening in Washington County on Highway 21 at Highway E. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Ford Mustang driven by 18-year old Joshua Walther of Cadet was traveling northbound and failed to stop at a red traffic signal. The front of the Ford Mustang struck the driver side of a 2004 Buick Century driven westbound by 65-year old Lillian Smith of Salem. The Buick then traveled off the right side of the roadway and down an embankment. Smith suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Washington County Memorial Hospital by the Washington County ambulance. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. Both the Ford Mustang and the Buick Century were totaled and both were removed from the scene by Elliot’s Towing.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their March meeting Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the agenda and minutes from the February meeting, the Board reviewed and approved bills and reviewed their budget and upcoming calendar of events. The monthly reimbursement report showed a total of 20 calls for the month and they included: four calls for structure fires, one call for a flue fire, four calls for brush fires, three calls for a landing zone to be created, one call for a vehicle accident, four calls for mutual aid, one call for a fire alarm and there were two calls for training. The total calls to date for the 2016 year is 68. There was no new or old business, but during reports, Fire Chief Brad Nash reported that the Kawasaki Mule Program for fire departments is on the back burner until later this fall, as none are currently available for the Fire Program. Nash also reported that the Firefighter 1 and 2 classes are going well. Nash then wanted to discuss with the Board the floor cleaning, stripping and floor care in general. The Board asked Chief Nash to check sources for alternative means and get more information before reporting back to the Board with the information and recommendations. The Board then set their April meeting for Tuesday, April 5th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 PM and the meeting was then adjourned. That meeting will be open to the public.
