An accident occurred in Crawford County on I-44 about one mile east of Cuba Saturday morning. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Ford F250 Pickup driven by 39 year-old Duane W. Schramm of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, was eastbound when the driver lost control. The truck traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck the cable median barrier. It then returned to the roadway, traveled off the right side of the roadway, and overturned several times down an embankment. Schramm sustained serious injuries and was Life Flighted to Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur. A passenger, 34-year old Malaysha Allen also of Pauls Valley, sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. The report stated that both occupants were wearing safety restraints and that the Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by Miles and Sons Towing of Cuba.

Considered by many as the unofficial beginning of Spring, tomorrow will be the opening of trout season in Missouri's trout parks where you can participate in the catch-and-keep trout season. There are four trout parks in Missouri and two of them are in our area: Montauk State Park near Salem, and Maramec Spring Park near St. James. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) operates trout hatcheries at the parks. To help predict angler turnout on opening day, hatchery staff rely on permit records going back more than 70 years. The Montauk hatchery staff expects a crowd of about 2,000 anglers and Maramec Spring staff is planning for a crowd of about 1,500. Based on these predictions, hatchery staff will stock three trout per expected angler on opening day for a total of more than 22,500 fish averaging around a foot in length. The hatcheries will also stock a mix of "lunkers" ranging in three to 10 pounds. Due to the heavy rain and record-breaking flood that took place this past December, MDC crews have been inspecting flood damage and evaluating the impact these floods may have on hatcheries, fish production and fish numbers. It's important to know anglers need a daily trout tag to fish in Missouri's trout parks. Daily trout tags can only be purchased at each of the trout parks. Missouri residents 16 years of age through 64 need a fishing permit in addition to the daily tag. Nonresidents 16 years of age and older also need a fishing permit. For more information go to the website…mdc.mo.gov.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds anglers and hunters that annual resident and nonresident fishing permits, resident hunting and fishing permits, and resident small-game hunting and fishing permits purchased in 2015 expire at the end of the day today. Anglers and hunters can purchase permits for 2016 online at mdc.mo.gov by clicking “Buy Permits” on the MDC homepage. They can also buy permits through the Department’s free “Mo Hunting” mobile app, or from MDC nature centers, regional offices, and many other locations where permits are sold. People can also buy permits over the phone at800-392-4115 using a credit card, paying a convenience fee, and waiting about a week for the permits to arrive by mail. Anglers, hunters, and trappers can get copies of the Department’s 2016 Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations and 2016 Summary of Missouri Hunting and Trapping Regulations online and at MDC offices, nature centers, and many other places where permits are sold. Conservation makes Missouri a great place to hunt, trap, and fish. For more information on hunting, trapping, fishing, and other outdoor activities in Missouri, visit mdc.mo.gov.
