The Salem Park Board met Monday night at the Salem Community Center @ The Armory. At the meeting, Parks and Recreation Director Tye Lydon reported there were nine teams that signed up for the adult basketball league. Lydon said he will have to return the deposit of the single women’s team that signed up. Games for the adult league will be played on Sunday afternoons at the high school gym. Lydon said a total of 86 children in the 1st through 6th grade were signed up for the Youth Basketball League. That broke down to 52 children in the 1st and 2nd grades, and the remaining 34 in the 3rd through 6th grades. These games will be held on  Saturdays’ at the high school gym. Lydon went on to say signups would be held for the Spring Youth Soccer League starting Monday, February 29th and continuing through March 7th at the Salem Administrative Offices. The league is for children from 4 to 12 years of age and the cost is $20 per child. The games will be played at Al Brown Fields on Saturdays from April 2nd through May the 7th. Lydon went on to say he is looking to add co-ed slow pitch softball as well as kickball, volleyball for adults and flag football as well as the baseball and softball programs for the youth. It was suggested by the board to look into the Frisbee golf course at the Salem City Park to see if it was installed correctly and promote it’s use. Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Tyler Wofford provided a report to the board for work that is being done or needs to be done the months of March through May. He said they are working the new playground area as they are pouring the outside perimeter sidewalk. He said they have to install metal hand railing around the playground area and will ask for a budget adjustment of $7,661.51 at the next Board of Aldermen meeting. A lot of field work will need to be done from digging up the infields and removing the crab grass to adding dirt to low lying areas to spreading fertilizer and lime on the fields. Wofford said he would like to resurface and add new grass to the old baseball south field at Al Brown to create a safer place for soccer and football activities. Wofford had a addressed including more lighting at the park, pouring concrete pads around the ball fields to list of long range plans he would like to see eliminate trash and weeds, upgrade the electric at all pavilions to meet the new city codes, plus look into adding full time bathroom at the roadside park. He also mentioned replacing the roofing at the pool, on one pavilion at the park and the Al Brown concession building. The board discussed the Al Brown situation and considered tearing that building down and rebuilding the vandal proof bathrooms with a pavilion attached instead of having a concession area. No action was taken on the discussion. The meeting was then adjourned.
