Hospitals make significant investments in their communities, probably more than you know. The value they provide to their communities is much broader than the delivery of health care services. They provide a strong economic foundation through their investments in employees, buildings and equipment. They also provide benefits to their communities through charity care and absorbing bad debt, helping educate and train the health care workforce, and offering free or reduced price clinic services. The investment the Salem Hospital makes in Dent County underscores the importance of our hospital as an economic engine to Salem's local economy. The information presented is the investment in the community the Salem Hospital made in the 2014 fiscal year. They provided $169,655 in charity care and wrote off $1,561,094 in bad debts for a total of $1,730,740 in uncompensated care. The Salem Hospital paid for health education for their staff at a cost of $83,206 and also provided $254,228 worth of care for Medicaid patients that went unpaid. The total of community investment for patient services came to $2,068,174. The Salem Memorial District Hospital paid out $9,382,878 in payroll and benefits to their employees. For the fiscal year 2014, the Salem Hospital showed a net loss from operations of $86,300 generating $17,375,469 in revenue and incurring $17,997,271 in expenses.
