The Dent County Sheriff’s Department conducted a short term narcotics investigation on Friday, February 5th. Deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 800 block of South Highway 19. During a search of the passengers, about seven grams of suspected methamphetamine was located along with drug paraphernalia. As a result the discovery, 48-year old Howard Harper and 25-year old Amber Crocker, both of Salem were arrested. Harper is currently being held in the Dent County Jail on a $100,000 cash only bond. Crocker is being held on a $10,000 cash only bond. A subsequent search warrant of Harper’s residence was then executed and during the search more methamphetamine drug paraphernalia was located. This information is just a mere accusation, and is not evidence of guilt. All evidence in support of any charge must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.

Native trees, shrubs, and woody vines can help improve wildlife habitat and soil and water conservation while also improving the appearance and value of private property. The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) George O. White State Nursery near Licking offers Missouri residents a variety of native seedlings for reforestation, windbreaks, erosion control, as well as for wildlife food and cover. The State Nursery provides mainly one-year-old bare-root seedlings with sizes varying by species. Seedlings are available in quantities of 10, 25, or 100 per species. Prices for seedling quantities range from $6-32 per bundle. Receive a 15-percent discount up to $20 off seedling orders with a Heritage Card. Orders can be placed until April 15, 2015. Orders will be shipped or can be picked up at the State Nursery from February through May. Quantities are limited so order early. Seedlings varieties include pine, pecan, oak, dogwood, tulip poplar, cottonwood, sweetgum, cypress, birch, hickory, willow, persimmon, pawpaw, deciduous holly, redbud, wild plum, ninebark, witch hazel, serviceberry, mulberry, elderberry, and many others. Images and information on available items, and ordering information, can be found in the Department’s 2014-2015 Seedling Order Form catalogue. The catalogue is available in the November issue of the Missouri Conservationist, at MDC regional offices and nature centers, online at mdc.mo.gov, or by calling the State Nursery at 573-674-3229. When you decide on the trees you want, there is sales tax of 5.725 percent that will be added to all bills unless you furnish a tax exemption certificate. There is also a handling charge of $5 added to each order. Do not send a payment or credit card information with your order. You will be billed later. This prevents you paying for items that may have sold out before your order is received. No phone orders are accepted. Orders can be submitted by mail, Internet or fax. Orders are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis until supplies are depleted, and each year many species sell out quickly. To get the plants you want, please send your order in as soon as possible. After your order has been processed, you will receive an acknowledgement card about two weeks after placing your order stating what seedlings that can be furnished. This card also is your billing notice and includes sales tax. Please pay promptly by check, money order, MasterCard or VISA after receiving the billing notice. Please write your order number on your check. Orders must be paid in full before they can be shipped or picked up. If payment is not received within five days after the due date indicated on the card, your order will be canceled and the stock reallocated. If you DO NOT receive a billing card from the nursery, call them at 573-674-3229 to inquire about the status of your order.

The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Thursday, January 28th at 6:14 in the evening, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed an employee of Wal-Mart had stolen cash and merchandise valued at $399.94. Further investigation led to the detention of a 30-year old Salem male as a result of an internal investigation and information provided by the Wal-Mart loss prevention team. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Saturday, January 30th at 3:26 PM, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a red 20-inch Huffy bicycle valued at $70.00 from the yard of a residence in the 1400 block of South Hickory. On Sunday night, January 31st at 11:22, an officer transported a 37-year old Salem female to the Ozark Medical Center in West Plains, in lieu of a mental commitment order. Antonio Quick scored 20 points and Kobe Mead added 16 more as Salem Tigers thrashed the Houston Tigers, 78-51 Tuesday night at Houston. Logan Woolf added 10 points for Salem who are now 11-10 on the year and 3-1 in the SCA. They will be at Cabool Friday night.

Mark Scheifele scored in the fourth round of the shootout for his first career shootout goal in four attempts, and the Winnipeg Jets beat the St. Louis Blues 2-1 on Tuesday night. Brian Elliott made 32 saves in regulation and overtime for the Blues, who have been held to one goal or none in five of their last six games. The Blues play the Florida Panthers Friday night at 6:30. That game will be delayed until 9:00 and played back after Salem Basketball.

The Salem Youth Basketball League is accepting signups through this Friday from 8:00 to 5:00 at the City Administrative Offices at 400 North Iron Street. The Youth basketball League is open to all boys and girls in the 1st through the 6th grades. The cost is $20 per player. New Salem Parks and Recreation Director Tye Lydon is emphasizing good sportsmanship and the development of skills in this non-competitive, recreational basketball league. The league is for children of all skill levels. All games will be played at the Salem High School on Saturdays starting February 27th and lasting until March 19th. Lydon is also inviting men and women who are 18 years of age and older and no longer in high school to participate in a new Men’s and Women’s Adult Basketball League at the Salem High School that will start on February 28th. Registration is going on now until February 16th at the City Administrative Offices at 400 North Iron Street from 8:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the afternoon. The fee for a team of up to 12 players is $300 if signed up by February 15th and $325 if signing up late. SMDH Family Medicine is offering FREE comprehensive sports physicals this week at Physicians Office Building 3. You can schedule an appointment by calling 729-8000 and walk-ins are also welcome. All school aged children participating in this year’s spring sports or who plan to participate in sports in the 2016-2017 school year, are welcome as the physical carries over to next year. A parent or guardian MUST be present at the time of the physical.

Funeral services for Buren Clark Triplett of Safety Harbor, Florida, age 94, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the New Harmony Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Mt. Herman Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the New Harmony Baptist Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Donald H. Thomas of Boss, age 79, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
