The case of the State of Missouri vs Marvin Rice first degree murder trial that was scheduled to begin Monday in Dent County has been postponed as Judge Kelly Parker declared a mistrial Thursday morning citing low juror turnout in Wayne County. According to Judge Kelly Parker's docket entry, he said that after a day and a half of jury qualification, it became apparent to the court and all counsel that the qualification of a jury panel in Wayne County would not happen. Parker indicated the defendant asked for a mistrial and there was no objection by the state. Parker continued that both parties agreed to a change of venue to St. Charles County with the 42nd Judicial Circuit following the case to St. Charles County. A date for the trial has not yet been set.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report District I Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5460 and 6580, plus brush was being cut on county road 6580. District II Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5200, 4280 and 3050, while materials would be added to and grading done on county road 2120. He added that brush would be cut on county road 2050 and maintenance was being done on truck #114. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that Senator Claire McCaskill’s "Office On The Road” will be at the Maries County Courthouse in Vienna from 11:30 until 1:30 Tuesday February 9th to help constituents with Federal Issues. Those wishing to meet with the Senator’s representative must have an appointment and can call (573) 442-7130 to schedule a visit. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she balanced with the Collector and Assessor on all monthly collections, abatements and add-ons for the month of January and that the commissioners had reviewed those reports. She added that the Commissioners were also reviewing and approving bills for payment. The Commissioners will not meet on Thursday, February 11th as they will be in training in Columbia, and the Courthouse will be closed for Washington’s Birthday on February 15th. The next regular meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

On Monday, February 1st, Dent County Deputies conducted a knock and talk in the 400 block of County Road 3260. During a search of the residence suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia was located. As a result of the items found, 51-year old Gayle Anderson, and 18-year old Dustin Anderson, both of Salem, were arrested. Gayle Anderson is currently being held in the Dent County Jail with a bond of $11,000 cash only. Dustin Anderson was released pending a court appearance. 

The Dent Count Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their February meeting Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the agenda and minutes from the January meeting, the Board reviewed and approved bills, and also reviewed their calendar of events. The monthly reimbursement report was presented with a total of 29 calls for the month of January. There were four calls for structure fires, seven calls for brush fires, one call for a landing zone, six calls for first responders, six calls for a vehicle accident, one call for mutual aid, three calls for haz-mat, and one call for training. Total calls to date for the year are 48. In old business, the Board had previously asked for a list of surplus items and the list was presented to the Board that included; a Chevy Blazer, a Dodge pickup that is still in service at this time, and a generator with a transfer switch. The Board approved putting the items out for bid. There was no new business and during reports, Fire Chief Brad Nash reported that he has met with the R-4 Principal about a Life Lock System and any applicable fire codes. After inspection, Nash reported that there are no codes that would be in violation and installation could go forward. Nash also reported that Fire Fighter 1 & 2 training is going well with everyone in attendance. He said that he was working on a standard form for evaluations and hopes to have it ready for the next Board meeting. He went on to say that he has been in contact with Kawasaki of Rolla for a program that would provide the Department with an ATV Mule for one year. This would aid in many facets of the departments duties. The Board then set their March meeting for Tuesday, March 8th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 PM and the meeting was then adjourned.

An accident happened Wednesday night 6:33 in Crawford County on Highway 8 inside Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Toyota Tacoma driven by 35-year old Justin Gunn of Steelville was traveling westbound on highway 8, traveled across the center of the roadway and struck a 2004 Jeep Cherokee driven eastbound by 34-year old Travis Giest of Steelville in the left rear of the Jeep. The Toyota then struck the front of a 2010 GMC Sierra driven eastbound by 67-year old Clifford Miles of Steelville. The Toyota then traveled off the left side of the roadway, striking the bridge face and coming to rest. The Jeep Cherokee came to a controlled stop on the shoulder while the GMC traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck a guardrail. Miles and a passenger in the GMC, 65-year old Karan Miles both suffered minor injuries and was transported by the Steelville ambulance to Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Toyota Tacoma and the GMC Sierra were totaled and removed by Miles and Sons. The Jeep Cherokee sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene. The Steelville Police Department and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department assisted the highway patrol.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will host the Ava Bears tonight in SCA Conference play. The JV will play at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow. Payton Curley scored 18 points to lead the Salem Lady Basketball Tigers over Cabool Thursday night by the final score of 66-37. Baylee Bilyeu added 16 points and Michaela Chilton netted 10 more points. The win improves Salem's record to 17-3 on the season and 5-0 in the SCA. The Lady Tigers will host the 15-5 Cuba Lady Wildcats Monday night starting at 6:00.

Joonas Donskoi and Joe Thornton scored in the second period, Martin Jones made 26 saves and the San Jose Sharks beat the St. Louis Blues 3-1 on Thursday night. The Blues play Minnesota Wild Saturday at 7 p.m. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
