The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night of their regular meeting at the city hall council chambers. The board approved the request from Fred Whitaker to block off 4th Street downtown from Highway 19 to Jackson on June 11th from 9:00 in the morning until 10:00 that night for a Moonlight Madness Street Festival. The board further approved the request from Goldie Spahn representing Relay for Life to use Pavilion #1 and the surrounding road at the Salem City Park on August 20th for Relay for Life from 8:00 in the morning until 10:00 that night. Spahn also requested the pool be closed that day and it normally would since school is in session unless there would be a pool party scheduled. The alderman reserved the right to open the pool if a party happens to be scheduled that day. Becky Heathman from the Salem Area Community Betterment Association asked the aldermen if SACBA could form a group to look into the renovation of the Old City Hall. The board said she didn’t need to ask to form the group, but they would need to bring any ideas to the board before anything could be done. The board approved the consent agenda before Alderwoman Molly Zettel reported on the Utility Committee meeting held prior to the meeting. She said they discussed water and sewer rates for Heartland Metal, discussed properties that have a home and separate garage being billed separately, sending out utility bills via e-mail, adding a second water meter for those who water their lawn and more, but the committee reached no conclusions and will meet again on March 7th. City Administrator Ray Walden reported on the Salem Initiative meeting held on Saturday at SBU with comprehensive updates from each group, plus he reported that a few community leaders met with a class at Missouri S&T to discuss community project ideas for Salem that the class will work on. This has been done twice in the past. The board approved Bill #3310 that amended the city’s code of ordinances on elections to now match the new laws established by Senate Bill 104 passed last year by the Missouri Legislature. The board approved the re-appointment of Rose Kinerk to the Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority for another four year term, and approved the purchase of rock used in the replacement of 2 to 6 inch water lines in the amount of $3,201.87 from Capital Quarries. The board then went into closed session to discuss real estate.

Captain James W. Remillard, the commanding officer of Troop I, announced that sometime during the month of February, troopers assigned to Troop I will be conducting a DWI saturation patrol in Crawford County. Troopers assigned to these special enforcement operations will patrol those highways where in the past a higher number of alcohol-related arrests and traffic crashes have occurred. Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.
