The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams was in to get signatures on approved transfers that were budgeted. In the road report, District I Commissioner Dennis Purcell said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6675, 6320 and 6210, while brush would be cut on county road 6633. He went on to say that his crew was out cleaning the low water crossing on county road 2440 and cleaning pipes on county road 4110. Purcell added that ditch work was being done on county road 4080. District II Commissioner Gary Larson said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2110, 5260 and 3180, while brush was being cut on county road 2070. He added that materials were being hauled to county road 2110, the road that had the huge washout, and also Dent County Road 3180. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that on Tuesday he, along with Bob Parsons who is the  MRPC member representing Agriculture and Agribusiness, were in Jefferson City for MRPC’s Day at the Capitol. He said that there were three Presiding Commissioners and two city mayors, along with other MRPC members in attendance. The group visited with all the Senators and Representatives from the eight counties that make up Meramec Regional Planning Commission about the current MRPC’s legislative priorities. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley again reminded voters that absentee voting starts February 2nd for the March 15th Presidential Preference Primary and that February 17th is the last day to register to vote for the that election. Curley said that thanks to media coverage her office has had a number of voters in to update their name or address change for the voter identification card. She added that ballots would be available for the Democratic, Republican, Libertarian and Constitutional Parties. Curley also noted that the Commission was paying bills on Thursday. Presiding Commissioner Skiles stated that Sheriff Stallings is waiting on Centurylink to send a representative to address upgrading the 911 system. Skiles added that he was very, very disappointed with the cancellation of the 911 maintenance contract without any notice by Centurylink, as well as their poor public relations over the issue. Tim Bruemmer with Henderson Products, Inc. of Manchester, Iowa was in to discuss the county’s need for truck bodies, snow blades and trucks. Rich Hall, Melissa Steward and Thom Haines of the Forest Service were in to review Title II Grants under the Secure Rural Schools act. Hall is retiring and Steward will be coordinating Title II after Hall retires in March. Barbara LaPointe was in to discuss maintenance on Public Road 401. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

An accident happened in Salem at 3:33 Thursday afternoon, January 21st, when 55-year old Steven McCarter of Rolla, drove recklessly through Salem showing a passenger how fast his truck could accelerate on Center Street that was still partially covered with ice and with children present since there was no school. McCarter was arrested after crashing his 2003 Ford F-350 in the 1000 block of Center Street into a utility pole and was then found sitting on the porch of residence by the Dent County Sheriff's Department deputy after running from the scene. McCarter's blood alcohol level was measured at .253 which is almost three times the state level of .08. McCarter was charged with felony driving while intoxicated – persistent offender, felonious restraint, first degree property damage, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident and second degree assault – operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated resulting in an injury. McCarter is being held at the Dent County Jail with a $50,000 cash only bond. A passenger in the Ford F-350 at the time of the accident suffered a minor injury and was treated at the Salem Memorial District Hospital.
