In closed session last Thursday night, the Salem R-80 Board of Education voted 7-0 to extend Superintendent John McColloch’s contract for an additional year. McColloch was originally hired for the R-80 Superintendent position in January of 2015 by the R-80 Board of Education to begin July 1st of 2015 replacing Steve Carvajal who accepted the Superintendent’s job at the Clever R-5 School District. McColloch’s original contract was for two years and with the additional year extension, his contract is now good through the 2017-18 school year.

The Salem Initiative will hold their next meeting this Saturday morning at 10:00 at the SBU Community Room at 501 South Grand. The purpose of this meeting is for each Interest Group to describe itself, present plans for ideas and projects, and recruit new members.  Anyone and everyone interested in improving the future of Salem and the surrounding area is encouraged to attend. Coffee and snacks will be available at 9:30. If you are interested in attending, they request that RSVP, but it is not required, to info@thesaleminitiative.com.

The Dent County Health Center Board of Trustees met for their regular meeting on January 19th. The board reviewed contract updates including the new Million Hearts Contract that went into effect on January 1st, 2016. This contract will be administered in conjunction with Healthy Dent County and will work to improve care and education for our residents by focusing on the ABC’s of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. This will help prevent heart attacks and strokes in Dent County. Kelsey Schatz will serve as the Dent County Million Hearts Coordinator. A Million Hearts Kick-Off Event will be held at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory on February 25th at 4:00 showcasing this new effort along with other local health care professionals and resources for Dent County. After some discussion, the Board agreed to provide 200 $10 fruit and vegetable vouchers from Country Mart to participants who visit the Health Center’s booth. The board heard from Jane Jadwin that only four cases of influenza have been detected in Dent County through December, and there were three dog bites in Dent County in December. Anyone who is bitten by an animal that is not available for quarantine or testing should contact their physician and it is advisable that rabies prophylaxis be started. The Health Center encourage the public to make sure their pets are vaccinated with the rabies vaccine yearly and be aware that if their animal bites someone, they are responsible for any medical expenses or treatment for the victim. Jadwin then presented the 2015-2016 budget for Board review. The Health Center ended the fiscal year on December 31st, 2015 with revenues over expenses of $78,229 with an increase in cash from the previous year of $83,465. The board approved a 3% raise in employee salaries and also approved to renew a 12-month CD at the Bank of Salem for .40% interest. The board approved the purchase of Dent County Health Center uniform jackets for $638 from Classic Design Embroidery. The board received a copy of the Dent County Health Center Annual Report that summarized all the services provided in 2015 and then approved the expenses for December before setting the next meeting for February 16th at 5:00. The meeting was adjourned.

The City of Salem Utility Committee will conduct a meeting, called by Alderwoman Molly C. Zettel, on Monday, February 1st at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 6:00 PM. The purpose of the meeting will be to review the utility rates for accounts with multiple units and a review of utility rates for Heartland Metal. The meeting of the City Utility Committee is open to the public. 

The City of Salem Finance Committee will hold a meeting, called by Alderman Haydn Powell on Tuesday, February 2nd at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory located at 1200 West Rolla Road beginning at 6:00 PM. The purpose of the meeting will be to review the 2014-2015 audit, and the financial performance for July through December 2015. At the meeting will be a discussion of tentative budgeting assumptions for 2016-2017 including: projected revenues (sales tax, property tax, cart tax, utilities revenue, parks and recreation fees, etc), proposed Capital Projects from the Capital Projects Committee and proposed staffing and benefit levels (health Insurance, etc). The meeting of the City of Salem Finance Committee is open to the public.

The Friends of the Salem Public Library will be holding a meeting on Monday, February 1st at the Salem Library at 403 North Jackson. For more information, please call the Library at 729-4331. The meeting is open to anyone.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will be in Mountain Grove to face Hartville in the Winner’s Bracket of the Family Pharmacy Tournament tonight starting at 6:00. You can hear the game on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com starting at 5:45 with Tiger Talk and Coach Conrad Prugh. Salem enters the game with an 8-8 record. Hartville enters the game with a 13-4 record and ranked #1 in Class 2.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will host the Steelville Lady Cardinals tonight at the SHS Gym. JUST IN...The VARSITY game will be held at 6:00 as Steelville does not have enough healthy girls to have a full JV game. Two quarters will be played AFTER the varsity contest. The Lady Tigers enters the game with a 14-3 record and winners of their last six straight games.

Tyler Ulis scored 20 points, Derek Willis added a career-best 18 and No. 20 Kentucky used an early 20-0 run to blow past outmanned Missouri 88-54 on Wednesday night. Kentucky spotted the Tigers an opening layup by Wes Clark before the big spurt that quickly put the game out of reach, twice stretching its lead to 40 points in the second half.

Funeral services for John Ray Dotson of Bixby, age 66, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Dotson Cemetery in Bixby. Memorials may be made to the Dotson Cemetery.

Funeral services for Agnes Gray of Salem, age 89, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will from the 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Donald Grant Lea of Salem, age 81, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Empire Cemetery.

Memorial services for Verna Louise Setzer of Hermann, formerly of Cherryville, age 72, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Freeman Cemetery in Cherryville.
