Have you made your appointment yet? Volunteers for AARP will be conducting free tax filing assistance again this year at the Salem Community Center@ the Armory computer lab. This free tax filing assistance will begin on Friday, February 5th and continue every Friday until April 8th. To schedule your appointment, you may call the Salem Community Center @ the Armory at 729-8163. All appointments are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are trained in filing certain tax forms and schedules, including the Form 1040. However, the Volunteer Protection Act requires that our volunteers stay in the scope of the program. If counselors feel they do not have adequate knowledge or your return is too complex, you may need to seek out another qualified counselor or you will need to get paid tax assistance. Items you need to bring to have your tax returns prepared include proof of identification such as a picture ID, Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration. Also needed are birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return; your wage and earning statements such as Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc from all employers must be brought. Year-end Social Security Statements showing your total Social Security received and Medicare payments for the year will also need to be brought with you as well. Don't forget to bring with you any interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099-INT or 1099-DIV). A copy of last year’s federal and state returns would be very helpful for the tax preparation, if it is available. You will also need to bring proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit, such as a blank check or deposit slip. To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. The Salem Community Center @ the Armory is located at 1200 W. Rolla Road.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) invite Missouri public, private, and home-school students in grades K-8 to help fight litter in the Show-Me State -- and to have creative and educational fun -- by participating in the 2016 "Yes You CAN Make Missouri Litter-Free" trash-can-decorating contest. The annual trash-can contest encourages school classes and groups to join in the fight against litter by decorating and displaying a large trash can with the "No MOre Trash!" logo and a litter-prevention message using a variety of creative media. The annual contest is sponsored by MDC and MoDOT as part of the state's "No MOre Trash!" (NMT) statewide litter campaign. Schools may submit one entry in each competition category: K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Entries are judged based on creativity, adherence to contest rules, and effective use of theme and logo. The First-place winners from each competition category receive $200 awarded to the sponsoring schools. All first-place winners are then eligible for a grand prize of a trophy and $600 awarded to the sponsoring school. There is no entry fee for the contest. Participating school groups must submit a completed entry form online with up to three photos to nomoretrash.org by Friday, March 18. Contest rules, entry forms, logo, past contest entries & winners, and educational information can also be found at nomoretrash.org.
