The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their January meeting Thursday evening. After approval of the agenda, Superintendent John McColloch wanted to thank the Judson-Young Foundation for their recent donation of $25,000 to the school district and also thanked Exxon Mobil for their recent $500 donation to the Middle School. McColloch then presented certificates to each of the Board of Education members from Governor Nixon in honor of School Board Recognition Week January 24th through 30th. He then reported that the Superintendent Advisory Committee met recently to discuss the direction of the Salem R-80 school district and will conduct another meeting in April. Election results were declared as incumbents Dustin Howard and Bernie Sirois re-filed for the two empty positions on the Board and were unopposed. Assistant Superintendent John Smith reported that the results of the first semester EOC tests for American Government were in at 75% of the students scoring advanced or proficient. Mrs. Crocker reported that the William Lynch Elementary has 91% of their students enrolled for the entire year at or above 90% in attendance. At the Upper Elementary, Mrs. Wisdom reported that 96% of the students were there 90% of the time in December. Mr. Roberts reported at the Middle School the 7th grade boys basketball has completed their season ending 1-10 while 8th grade finished at 11-5 and won a first place trophy in the Cabool and North Woods Tournaments. He said that Anna Wigger and Irv Johnson took 1st place in their respective categories at the recent Mountain Grove Archery Tournament. Emily Pruitt, alto saxophone, Jonathan Stark, trumpet and Samantha Tune, clarinet will be in the SCA All-Conference Middle School Band at the clinic and performance in Ava on February 6th. At the Salem Senior High School, Mr. Anderson congratulated the Salem Girls Basketball Team for being ranked 9th in Class 4. He stated that ACT incentives were announced for the April 19th, ACT test for all juniors and that a new Twitter account was established to keep patrons informed about all activities at the high school. Josh Sirois then discussed the partnership between the Salem Betterment Community Board and the High School Umbrella Group. The Board approved the High School Attendance Policy that states after 30 hours of unexcused absences the student then looses credits, and the Board gave their approval of support for the Bright Future program, a community based program aimed at aiding students with any need that they may have. The Board then approved board policy ACAE-version 2 and accepted the resignations of Julie Case, a part-time High School cook, and Kristina Bermudez, an Upper Elementary Aide. The Board then voted to go into closed session and the meeting was adjourned.

The Dent County Extension Council will conduct a meeting tonight at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory, located at 1200 West Rolla Road in Salem beginning at 5:30 PM. The meeting is open to the public.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a special meeting, called by Mayor J.J. Tune, at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room on West Fourth Street tonight beginning at 6:00 PM. The purpose of the special meeting will be to consider Resolution 1-2016 authorizing the Mayor to sign the certificate of adopting the City of Salem 457 deferred compensation plan. The special meeting is open to the public.

Candidate filings for the City of Salem ended last Tuesday for one West Ward Alderman and one East Ward Alderman seat available as well as the position of Mayor. Those having filed for the East Ward Aldermanic seat are Jerry J. Gibbs, Jr. and Kim Shelton. Those interested in the West Ward Aldermanic position and having filed are Tyler McConnell, Steven R. Conners and incumbent Molly C. Zettel. Brad Nash filed for the Mayoral position along with current Mayor, J.J. Tune who re-filed. Bill Riley, Jr. who had earlier filed for mayor, withdrew from the race.

Missouri's 2015-2016 deer-hunting seasons ended January 15th with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reporting a preliminary total harvest of 279,401 deer. Top counties for the overall seasons were Texas with 5,812 deer harvested, Franklin with 5,463, and Howell with 5,440. Hunters harvested 258,341 deer during the 2014-2015 deer hunting seasons. Deer hunting ended with the close of the archery season. Preliminary data from MDC showed that hunters checked 50,085 deer during the archery season. Top counties for the archery season were Jefferson with 1,153 deer harvested, St. Louis with 1,051, and Franklin with 1,012. Archery hunters checked 51,755 deer the previous year.  2015-2016 fall archery turkey hunting also ended January 15th. Preliminary data from MDC showed 3,067 turkeys harvested. Top counties for the fall archery turkey season were Texas with 80 birds harvested, Franklin with 74, and Laclede with 67. For the previous year, hunters harvested 2,587 turkeys. MDC reported seven firearms-related hunting incidents during the fall deer and turkey hunting seasons. All were non-fatal and involved self-inflicted injuries. In addition, the Department was notified of three tree-stand falls, one of which was fatal.

Kobe Mead scored 20 points as the Salem Tigers held on to beat the Newburg Wolves Saturday in the Consolation Championship game in St. James by the final score of 50-47. Eric Wood added 13 points for Salem who is now 7-9 on the year and who won 3 of the last 4 games. They will be in Mountain Grove tonight to face Marshfield in the 1st round of the Family Pharmacy Tournament at 7:30 on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com.

Payton Curley reached the 1,000 point career milestone as she netted 14 points to help lead the Salem Lady Tigers to a 49-29 win over Licking Friday in the Big Cat Classic. Baylee Bilyeu also scored 14 points and Kari Hatridge added a dozen for the Lady Tigers who are now 14-3 on the year. Salem won the Cat Classic for the first time since 2010-2011 season. They will host Steelville Thursday night starting at 6:00.

Jalen Jones scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half to lead No. 10 Texas A&M to a 66-53 victory over Missouri on Saturday. Wes Clark had 12 points for Missouri, which dropped its fourth straight. They are 8-11 on the season and 1-5 in the SEC Conference. They will play Kentucky Wednesday night.

Corey Crawford earned his 7th shutout of the year as the Chicago Blackhawks beat the St. Louis Blues Sunday night, 2-0. The Blues are six points behind the Blackhawks going into the All-Star Break. Blues’ goaltender Brian Elliott made 23 saves in the loss. On Friday night, the Blues lost to Colorado in the shoot-out, 2-1 with Alexander Steen scoring the only Blues goal.

Funeral services for Charlene Combs of Salem, age 66, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday night. Interment will be in the Miner Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Welfare Society.

Funeral services for Agnes Gray of Salem, age 89, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will from the 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. All arrangement are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.
