A couple of accidents occurred Thursday morning in Dent County on Highway 32 east of Salem. The first accident happened at 6:00 in the morning about 13 miles east of Salem when a 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup driven by 57-year old Kenny Volner of Bunker was traveling eastbound on Highway 32. The crash occurred as the Chevrolet struck a patch of ice in the roadway. The Chevrolet traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned. Volner suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem EMS. Volner was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The second accident occurred at 6:10 in the morning about 12 and a half miles east on Salem also on Highway 32. A 1988 Chevrolet S-10 pickup driven by 55-year old Cynthia Stluka of Salem was traveling eastbound on Highway 32 and struck a patch of ice in the roadway. The Chevrolet traveled off the left side of the roadway. Stluka overcorrected and the Chevrolet returned to the roadway and began overturning and then traveled off the right side of the roadway. Stluka suffered minor injuires and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem EMS. Stluka was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident occurred at 9:02 Thursday morning in Crawford County on Highway F about three miles north of I-44. According to the highway patrol report, a 2010 Nissan Versa driven by 20-year old Courtney Southard of St. James and was traveling northbound. The Nissan traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned. Southard suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Nissan Versa was totaled and removed from the scene by Miles & Sons Towing of Cuba.

An accident happened Thursday morning at 9:30 in Crawford County on Highway 49 at Dan Halbert Road. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 Chevrolet 1500 pickup driven by 48-year old Sherry Walter of Davisville was traveling northbound. The pickup struck a patch of ice in the roadway. The pickup began sliding, traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck the ditch and an electric pole. Walter suffered minor injuries and was taken by private vehicles to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet 1500 pickup sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.

An accident happened Saturday night at 6:10 in Phelps County on Route E about two miles north of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Ford Focus driven northbound by 19-year old Brian Gilbert of Rolla attempted to avoid an animal in the roadway and lost control of the Ford. The car traveled off the left side of the road and overturned. Gilbert suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the Phelps County Ambulance. Gilbert was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Focus was totaled and removed from the scene by C&C Towing.

Learn To Burn, an introduction to prescribed fire for landowners will be a workshop presented by the Missouri Department of Conservation on Friday, January 22nd from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Salem Community Center located at 1200 West Rolla Road in Salem. The objective of this workshop is to provide an overview on how to plan and conduct a safe and effective prescribed burn on various habitat types of land. Prescribed burning represents an effective and cost efficient management tool; however, there are many issues and concerns to be considered. Effective planning is necessary to achieve beneficial results as well as maintain a safe burn. This program will cover topics related to fire history, fire suppression, planning, weather, safety and equipment needs. Antonio Quick scored 22 points to lead the Salem Basketball Tigers to an upset win over the Liberty Eagles in Mountain View, 72-69. Also scoring in double figures for Salem were Kobe Mead with 16 points, Jakob Happel with 14 and Eric Wood with 10. Salem stopped their seven-game losing streak improving to 5-8 on the year and they are 1-0 in the SCA. The Tigers will face the Licking Wildcats tonight at 6:00 at the St. James Tournament. The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will travel to Rolla tonight to face the Lady Bulldogs. The JV will play at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow. Salem enters the game with a 12-3 record.

Sindarius Thornwell scored 22 points to lead No. 19 South Carolina to an 81-72 victory over Missouri on Saturday. Wes Clark led Missouri with a career-best 26 points and eight assists. Missouri is now 7-8 on the year and 1-3 in the SEC Conference. They will play Wednesday night against Georgia at 5:30 on KSMO Radio.

Jori Lehtera scored 2:04 into overtime, Brian Elliott made a career-high 46 saves and the St. Louis Blues beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 on Saturday night. Ty Rattie tied the game with 5:25 left for St. Louis, and Robby Fabbri and Paul Stastny also scored. The Blues have won three of four. They will host Pittsburgh tonight starting at 7:00. KSMO will join the game in progress after Tiger Basketball.

Tom Brady hit Rob Gronkowski with two touchdown passes and scored one himself Saturday to lead the New England Patriots into the AFC championship game with a 27-20 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City (12-6) had won a franchise-record 11 consecutive games going into the contest.

Funeral services for Lad Joseph Manor of St. James, age 90, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.

Funeral services for Bob McKune of Rolla, age 85, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at the Rolla Church of Christ. Visitation will be today from 4:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Little Prairie Bible Camp.

Memorial services for Charles Hayes of Salem, age 89, will be held Saturday, January 23rd at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Post 99.
