The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District I Commissioner Dennis Purcell said materials would be added to and grading done on Dent County Road 6040, while only grading would be done on county roads 4150, 4155 and 5610. He went on to say that the electrical wiring on the pup trailer was being finished. Purcell added that Wednesday evening he attended the Industrial Development Authority Meeting and will be attending the Tourism Committee Meeting Monday evening. District II Commissioner Gary Larson said grading would be done on Dent County Road 5280, while two men would be cutting brush on county roads 2360 and 2330. He added that his crew was working on a creek crossing on county road 2110, which has a huge hole that will require a considerable amount of fill materials. Larson said that he would be attending the Healthy Dent County Meeting that afternoon. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said he had received an email from USDA about an upcoming meeting Wednesday, January 20th on flood damage assistance for agriculture producers. The meeting is to be held in Rolla at the Comfort Inn and Suites at 1650 Old Wire Outer Road and attendees should use the rear entrance to access the conference room. He reminded everyone that the Courthouse will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said she balanced with the Collector and Assessor on all accounts, abatements and add-ons for the month of December. She added that the tentative budget would be available today for the public to view. Skiles commented that all the office holders and staff did a great job staying within their budgets during 2015. Curt Faigle with the 100-Acre Wood Road Rally was in to see if the Commissioners had any questions and provide schedules. The Rally will be held March 18th and 19th with The Commons being the service area and Saturday’s ending back at The Commons. Alderman Buzz Powell, City Administrator Ray Walden, Police Chief Keith Steelman, Mayor J.J. Tune and Sheriff Rick Stallings were in for an extensive discussion of the proposed Justice Center. The major topic discussed were the possibility of housing the Salem Police Department in the facility, which would improve communications and law enforcement in general and should result in some cost savings for both the City and County. More discussion is to be held and cost figures are to be developed. Rebecca Landewe with the Nature Conservancy and Nick Girando with Missouri Department of Conservation were in to share information. Landewe’s project area is the Current River Watershed where she works to find collaborative partners for projects such as forest management, wildlife management, timber sales, etc, which protect the water resources. Her primary reason for attending was to present information about a workshop for supervisors and grader operators on gravel road maintenance practices to be held in Van Buren February 24th and 25th. The workshop goal is to train operators on reducing costs while maintaining downstream water quality. Landewe will be getting more information to the Commissioners next week.
