The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night in the Council Chambers of City Hall. At the meeting, City Administrator Ray Walden introduced new Park and Recreation Director Tye Lydon to the board. Walden said he is getting introduced around town and becoming more familiar with his duties with the city. Walden reported the Salem Community Center @The Armory had 3,067 participants during the month of December. He said he and Electric Superintendent Brian Johns visited the MPUA Training Center in Kansas City where electric linemen can be trained. Walden said the city will sponsor a “Jumpin Java” at the Salem Chamber of Commerce office from 7:30 to 8:30 Friday, January 15th. The board also approved moving the next board meeting to Tuesday, January 19th due to the Martin Luther King holiday and also moved the February meeting to Tuesday, February 16 due to Presidents Day. Walden reported a Capital Improvements meeting would be held on January 25th at 6:00 with the all the department superintendents to report on the status of current capital improvements and their “wish list” for the next budget year. He also indicated the additional playground surface material should be delivered this week or next week at the latest where the park project will be completed. Walden also reported on updates to the City Employee Manual. Those updates include the change in the policy on holiday pay, employee evaluations that will determine pay increases based on merit not length of employment, and also personal cell phone usage that interferes with a person’s job performance. The board approved all three updates. Mayor JJ Tune added that during the budget process that employee benefits will be looked at further where a limit on the amount the city pays for employee health insurance will have a maximum amount where the employee will have to pay the rest. The board also approved the Police Department’s request to submit an LLEGB block grant for the purchase of new Motorola mobile radios, antennas, programming and vehicle installation as well as shipping that will be about $9,800. This is a no match grant for the city. The board then went into closed session.

The Salem Police Department released reports involving traffic stops, and a domestic disturbance. On Saturday, December 26th at 1:36 in the early morning, an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop.  A pursuit ensued when the driver of the suspect vehicle failed to stop and accelerated on Franklin near Highway 19. The officer followed the vehicle to McDonalds on Highway 19 South where the vehicle stopped and the driver, a 29-year old male of Salem exited the vehicle and fled on foot toward Hunt and Jackson. The traffic stop is still under investigation. On Monday, December 28th at 9:00 PM, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 900 block of South Warfel in reference to a domestic disturbance. The investigation of the report revealed a 56-year old Salem male had assaulted a 37-year old female and threatened her with a knife. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect for 2nd degree domestic assault and unlawful use of a weapon. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Tuesday, December 29th at 6:09 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of the driver, a 30-year old male of Salem for possession of heroin, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) shows that young deer hunters ages 6 through 15 checked 2,520 deer during Missouri's late youth portion of the 2015-2016 deer hunting season, which ran January 2nd and 3rd. Last year's late youth portion harvest total was 1,123. Youth hunters harvested a combined total of 16,615 deer during the early and late youth portions. The top counties for the early and late youth portions combined were Franklin with 384, Osage with 376, and Howell with 323 deer checked. Last year's early and late youth harvest total for the 2014-2015 seasons was 19,415. Deer hunting continues for this season with statewide archery hunting through January 15th.

Registration is now open for a basic beekeeping class to be held Saturday, January 30th at Brownwood Estates, 1341 California Street in Rolla, Mo. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with an optional bee garden tour from 2-3 p.m. The cost is $45 per person including lunch and class materials. Payton Curley scored 28 points and Baylee Bilyeu added 12 more as the Salem Lady Tigers edged the Lady Eagles of Mountain View-Liberty Monday night by the score of 52-46. The win improves Salem's record to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in the SCA. The Lady Tigers will next be in action this Friday as they play host to the Bunker Lady Eagles in a varsity only contest at 6:00 PM.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will be off until next Tuesday when they will be at Sullivan to face the Eagles.

The Missouri Tigers start their SEC Conference play starting tonight as they will face Georgia starting at 6:00. The pre-game show starts at 5:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio. Missouri enters the game with a 7-6 record while Georgia is 7-4 on the year.

The St. Louis Blues will travel to Colorado to face the Avalanche tonight at 8:00. KSMO will join the game in progress after the Missouri basketball game.

Three football teams -- the Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams, and San Diego Chargers -- submitted applications to the NFL on Monday to be relocated to Los Angeles for the start of the 2016 season. The NFL confirmed the receipt of all three applications. The applications will be reviewed this week by league staff and three league committees that will meet in New York on Wednesday and Thursday. The applications will be presented for consideration at next week’s league meeting in Houston on Tuesday and Wednesday. In order to be relocated, a team must receive an affirmative vote from 24 out of the 32 teams in the league.

Funeral services for Alvin D. Apsher of Rolla, age 76, will be Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Landmark Baptist Church. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Landmark Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Emery A. Clonts of Steelville, age 80, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Steelville Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Benner Funeral Home and Saturday from 10:00 until service time at the church. Interment will be in the St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery in Bem, MO with full military honors. Memorials may be given to the Steelville Assembly of God Church Fellowship Hall Fund.
