An accident happened in Phelps County Sunday night at 7:14 on Highway 68 about 12 miles north of Salem that took the life of a man from St. James. According to the highway patrol report, 43-year old Don Watson of St. James was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound when he failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the right side of the roadway, where the truck struck two signs. The Silverado then overturned several times ejecting Watson from the vehicle before striking a tree and coming to rest on its wheels. Don Watson was pronounced dead at the scene by Phelps County Coroner Larry Swinford at 7:30 Sunday night. A passenger, 14-year old Cordell Watson of St. James, suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the St. James Ambulance. Don Watson was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident while Cordell Watson was. The Chevy Silverado was totaled and removed from the scene by Spurgeon’s Towing.

On Monday afternoon, a fire started at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem in the upstairs apartment and office area. The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to the call and used ladder truck #81 to try to get on top of the fire dousing the roof and upper structure with water. Center Street and West 2nd Street were closed off by the Salem Police Department to allow the firefighters full access to the building. The Dent County Fire Protection District had mutual aid from the Rolla Fire Department, St. James Fire Department and Jadwin Fire Department. The building sustained extensive damage in the fire and no cause of the fire has been released.

The Dent County Commissioner met Monday morning for their regular meeting. In the road report, District I Commissioner Dennis Purcell indicated that rock would be hauled to and a grader would be spreading the rock on Dent County Roads 4080, 5380, 5390, 5460, 6230, 6350 and 6490. Purcell said materials only would be added to county roads 6400 and 5170. District II Commissioner Gary Larson said workers would be out cleaning debris from the low water crossings and bridges before trying to grade on county roads 2110, 2240 and 2270. Larson did report only materials would be added to Dent County Roads 2070, 2200 and 5320. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind all vendors that no bills submitted can be paid until the 2016 budget is approved later in the month. Skiles also wanted to thank all those bell ringers and those who donated to help the Salvation Army reach and surpass their goal this year of $25,000. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said she is still working on the 2016 budget. She also said the last day to register to vote for the March 15th Presidential Primary is February 7th. She also wants to remind anyone who has moved to please let her office know of their new address. Diesel bids were taken last Thursday and MFA Oil was the low bid of $119 per gallon for 7,000 gallons. It was also reported the county will host the Marvin Rice double homicide trial February 8th through the 12th at the courthouse. Dent County Emergency Management Director Brad Nash came in to check with the commission about road damages from the heavy rains and Dent County did not have any serious damage. He also discussed with the commission a SEMA grant for supplies and equipment. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open the public.

Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock wants to thank all those who paid their property and real estate taxes by December 31st either in person, by mail, in the drop box in the front of the courthouse or online. This is the first year people could pay their taxes online with a debit card, credit card or e-check and Medlock said the county received $50,526.47 worth of taxes through the on-line payments.

An accident occurred at 8:07 Saturday night in Crawford County on Clinton Hill Road about a half miles west of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Mitsubishi Montero driven by 20-year old Nicolas Light of Steelville was traveling westbound. The Mitsubishi traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Light suffered minor injuries and was taken to Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Mitsubishi Montero sustained minor damage and was removed by a private party.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will conduct their January meeting tonight at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and a review of the minutes from the last meeting, the Board will approve bills and review their calendar of events. The Board will then address the monthly reimbursement report and address any old or new business followed by reports on items concerning the fire district. The Board will then set their next meeting for Tuesday, February 2nd at the fire beginning at 6:00 PM and may then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel, if necessary. The January meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors is open to the public.

There will be a Community Center of the Ozarks Blood Drive today at the First Baptist Church at 201 West Third Street from 1:00 until 6:00 PM. You must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and bring your ID. There currently is about a three day supply of all types of blood available.

The Salem Community Center @ The Armory is installing memorial brick pavers in the front of the entrance off of Route J. Bobby Ryan scored twice, including the game-winner at 2:33 of overtime, to lift the Ottawa Senators to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Monday night. The Blues will be on the road for the next three games starting in Colorado Wednesday night against the Avalanche. Game time is at 9:00 with the pre-game show at 8:30 on KSMO.

Payton Curley scored 28 points and Baylee Bilyeu added 12 more as the Salem Lady Tigers edged the Lady Eagles of Mountain View-Liberty, 52-46. The win improves Salem's record to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in the SCA. The Lady Tigers will next be in action on Friday as they play host to the Bunker Lady Eagles in a varsity only contest at 6:00 PM.

Funeral services for Randall Lee “Randy” Greenwood of Salem, age 69, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Salem Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with full military honors.

Funeral services for Richard Arlen Walker of Salem, age 80, will be held today at 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 3:00 Tuesday at the chapel. Interment will be private at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Love Pack/Back Pack Program.

Funeral services for Alvin D. Apsher of Rolla, age 76, will be Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Landmark Baptist Church. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Landmark Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Emery A. Clonts of Steelville, age 80, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Steelville Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Benner Funeral Home and Saturday from 10:00 until service time at the church. Interment will be in the St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery in Bem, MO with full military honors. Memorials may be given to the Steelville Assembly of God Church Fellowship Hall Fund.
