The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports that young turkey hunters harvested 4,441 birds during the 2015 spring youth season, April 11th and 12th. Top harvest counties were Franklin with 117 birds, Greene with 88, and Cedar with 87. Young hunters checked 4,332 turkeys during last year’s spring youth weekend. Hunters age 6 through 15 are allowed to take one male turkey or turkey with a visible beard during the youth season. Those who harvest a turkey during the youth season may not take a second bird until the second week of the regular spring turkey season, which runs April 20 through May 10. Conservation makes Missouri a great place to hunt. Veterans are invited to attend a free beginning veteran farmer workshop, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, April 27, in Rolla. The workshop provides information to help some of the more than 300,000 veterans expected to return to Missouri in the next decade. The majority of returning veterans are likely to return to rural areas where they lived before serving their country, and many want to farm. A specialty production panel and a disability services panel will discuss resources for veteran farmers. Sarah Massengale, MU Extension community development specialist in Dent County, reports the event will include two farm tours: The Tomazi farm north of St. James features a commercial beef cattle operation, and the Knee Deep Farm in Cuba offers a look at a high tunnel operation where produce is grown for farmers markets. Knee Deep Farm also has a family-run cattle operation. Grazing systems at both farms will be discussed. The tours will require some walking. If you need special accommodations, call 729-3196. The event begins at the St. Pat’s Ballroom A, in the Havener Center located at 1346 N. Bishop Ave. in Rolla. To register, call the MU Extension Center in Dent County at 729-3196, or email hultines@missouri.edu. A free lunch is provided by MFA. The MU Extension, the Center for Rural Affairs and Missouri AgrAbility will sponsor the event.
