An accident occurred at 9:25 Monday morning in Dent County on Highway 19 about seven miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Ford F350 driven by 24-year old Barnabas Reynolds of Salem was traveling northbound on Highway 19, traveled off the right side of the roadway where Reynolds over corrected causing the Ford to travel off the left side of the roadway, strike an embankment and come to rest on it’s roof in the roadway. Reynolds suffered moderate injuries and was air lifted to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford F350 was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The Missouri State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Dent County Sheriff’s Office and the Dent County Fire Protection District.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done and materials would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2400 and 5020, while grading only would be done on county road 5600. Purcell went on to say that brush was being cut on Dent County Roads 5015 and 5085 and that a crew would be working on replacing batteries on the man lift. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads, 2180, 2183, 2185, 2190, 2193, 2195, 3140 and 3180. Larson went on to say that grading would also be done and materials would be hauled to Dent County Road 4330. He also said that brush was being cut on county roads, 3273 and 3275 and work was being done on the Dura Patcher. One man would be sent to Springfield to get oil for the Dura Patcher, a tree would be removed from county road 5225 and a pothole would be taken care of again on county road 3233. Sysco Corporation has abandoned its planned acquisition of rival US Foods, Inc. following a federal judge’s ruling against the deal last week, forcing the food-distribution giant to find a new strategy for its future that is likely to include smaller acquisitions. According to a story in the Wall Street Journal, Sysco, the nation’s largest purveyor of food and other supplies to restaurants and cafeterias, had been working on this merger for more than a year and a half when U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta in Washington last week issued a preliminary injunction to stop the deal on concerns it could hurt competition in the wholesale food market. In Judge Mehta’s lengthy decision, released on Friday, he said the Sysco-US Foods tie-up was the type of large combination that lawmakers were concerned about long ago when they gave the government the power to halt mergers. The Federal Trade Commission had filed a lawsuit in February challenging the transaction on antitrust grounds. Monday’s announcement eliminates what had been Sysco’s core strategic plan for its future since the deal to acquire US Foods for $3.5 billion was disclosed back in December of 2013. Sysco had said combining with its largest rival was vital because it would help the companies reduce costs and pass along those savings to customers, while other competitors would step up to vie for the number 2 slot. The deal’s collapse has immediate as well as long-term costs for the company. Sysco must now pay US Foods a $300 million breakup fee, on top of at least $355 million Sysco already spent on integration planning, attorneys and other merger-related costs as of the end of March. Sysco said it also will pay a $12.5 million breakup fee to Performance Food Group to terminate an agreement to sell it some of US Foods’ assets if that deal had closed. The Federal Trade Commission said Monday that the decision to abandon the merger “is a victory for both competition and consumers.”
