An accident occurred Saturday morning in Texas County that took the life of Edward R. Deen of Mountain Home, Arkansas. The accident occurred at 8:45 on Highway 63 one mile south of Simmons. According to the highway patrol report, a northbound 2008 Pontiac Vibe, driven by 42-year old Patricia A. Zulfer of Mountain Home, Arkansas, crossed the centerline and struck the side of a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 37-year old Dane A. Long of Houston, Missouri. After striking the Chevrolet, the Pontiac skidded and traveled off the roadway, overturned several times and came to rest off the roadway. The Chevrolet traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned. According to the report, Deem was not wearing a seat restraint and was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:35 that morning by Texas County Coroner Tom Whitaker. The report stated that Zulfer, along with 15-year old Alex J. Zulfer sustained moderate injuries and were transported to Cox South by Life Flight Helicopter. Fifteen year-old Kaitlyn A. Zulfer also sustained moderate injuries and was transported by the Texas County EMS to Texas County Memorial Hospital. Patricia Zulfer and her children were all wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. Long sustained minor injuries and provided his own transportation to the Texas County Memorial Hospital. He was not wearing his seat restraint when the accident occurred. The Pontiac was totaled and removed from the scene by Mike Jones Auto of Houston, while the Chevrolet was also totaled and removed from the scene by Jay’s Towing of Houston.

The Salem Farmers’ Market began accepting EBT, credit, and debit cards on June 6th. A “Double SNAP” program was also started that allows food stamp users to get up to $10 in additional funds to spend at the market. A total of $682.00 has been brought to the Farmer’s Market through these means so far. The dollar figures break down to $322 in EBT, $130 in Double SNAP, and $230 in debit and credit purchases. The number of people using EBT, Double SNAP and debit and credit purchases continues to grow with every market day and SACBA hopes to see it grow even more. The Farmer’s Market is open Tuesdays from 3:00 to 6:00 PM and Saturdays from 7:30 am to 12 noon. The Salem Farmers Market is located at 200 South Main Street, behind the visitor’s center and run to October.

Route K in Shannon and Texas Counties will be reduced to one lane as Missouri Department of Transportation crews partially overlay the roadway. The section of roadway is located from Route KK in Texas County to Akers Ferry in Shannon County. Weather permitting work will be performed Monday, June 29th through Wednesday, July 1st from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM daily. The work zone will be marked with signs.   Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area. The Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District has announced that Mahayla Breckner, a 7th grader at Salem R-80 Middle School, has won first place in the Ozark Rivers 23rd Annual Earth Day Poster, Trash and Electronic Art Contest. Breckner is the only winner in Dent County of the 48 winners and 26 honorable mentions announced in the seven county contest. All art entries were centered around the theme “Let’s Talk Trash–Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” The contest required contestants to re-purpose garbage into three-dimensional pieces of art or create posters to promote the contest theme. Entries included 531 posters entries, 73 art entries and 40 graphic art entries. The program was open to kindergarten through 12th grade, home school, college and university students who met the criteria in Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties. Judges for the contest included Tammy Snodgrass, Jill Hollowell and Kelly Sink-Blair of MRPC staff; Mayor James Morgan of Crocker, Amy Beers and Emily Pfeiffer of Phelps County Bank and Jessica Tipton of Mid America Bank. The identities of the students and their schools were concealed during the judging process. The 2015 Earth Day contest was funded through an Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District grant along with donations from several area sponsors. Sponsors included Bank of Salem, Citizens Bank of Newburg, Maries County Bank, Missouri Bank, Phelps County Bank, Belle State Bank, Legends Bank, Mid America Bank, Peoples Bank, Town and Country Bank and the Newburg Children’s Museum.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Salem present, “Pride In Our Country, Proud Of Our Flag”, as this years’ theme for the Independence Day parade in Salem, which will be held on Saturday, July 4th beginning at 6:00 pm. Those interested in participating in the July 4th parade should fill out an entry form and return the completed form TODAY! A reminder, no ATV’s are allowed. Yadier Molina had two doubles and an RBI and Carlos Martinez pitched six innings of one-run ball and the St. Louis Cardinals completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs with a 4-1 win on a rainy Sunday night at Busch Stadium. Martinez (9-3) stayed warm during the delay by throwing practice pitches in the tunnel every 15 minutes, and he managed to get through six innings with just 84 pitches. He gave up a run on two hits with six strikeouts. The Cardinals are off tonight.

Salvador Perez homered and knocked in three runs as the Kansas City Royals completed a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics with a 5-3 victory in Sunday's series finale. Omar Infante and Alex Rios had an RBI each to help the Royals earn their first sweep in Oakland since 2008 and win for the 10th time in their last 13 games. Jeremy Guthrie (6-5) limited Oakland's struggling offense to two runs and striking out a season-high seven over six solid innings. Kansas City will be in Houston tonight to face the Astros.

The St. Louis Blues made six selections at the 2015 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft held this weekend. With their first pick, the club drafted Niagara defenseman Vince Dunn (56th overall), followed by Red Deer forward Adam Musil (94th overall), Swift Current forward Glenn Gawdin (116th overall), Kalpa Jr. defenseman Niko Mikkola (127th overall), U.S. National Team Developmental Program goaltender and St. Louis native Luke Opilka (146th overall) and Owen Sound forward Liam Dunda (176th overall).

Memorial Services for Stoney Stafford Boxx of Steelville, age 7 months, will be held at 3:00 Wednesday at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 2:30 until service time.

Funeral services for Alice McDowell of Rolla, age 91, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Roach Cemetery in Rolla.
