The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Salem present, “Pride In Our Country, Proud Of Our Flag”, as this years theme for the Independence Day Parade in Salem, which will be held on Saturday, July 4th beginning at 6:00 pm. The parade route will run from the corner of South Grand and Franklin to the Dent County Courthouse. Line up begins at 5:15 pm. Those interested in participating in the July 4th parade should fill out an entry form and return the completed form by Monday, June 29th to the chamber office. The chamber wants to remind everyone that no ATV’s are allowed in the parade. Lineup positions will be on a first come, first served basis, and be sure and inform the Chamber if your entry is of a military affiliation. The University of Missouri Extension in partnership with Edward Jones Investments presents a Medicare Boot Camp that will be held on Tuesday, June 30th from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory at 1200 West Rolla Road in Salem. The Medicare Boot Camp is a free workshop that will feature: Medicare eligibility & enrollment, Medicare Parts A, B and D; Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage); Medigap (Medicare supplements) Choices; Medicare benefits and other related issues and protecting your Medicare. Person nearing age 65 who are eligible for Medicare; persons approaching Medicare eligibility due to a disability; persons with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD); caregivers and individuals working with Medicare beneficiaries should plan on attending this free workshop. Colonel J. Bret Johnson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the Patrol's participation in Operation Dry Water. Operation Dry Water is a national campaign in which marine law enforcement officers from across the country coordinate special patrols during the last weekend in June to keep our waterways safe from boaters operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Troopers will focus their efforts over the weekend of June 26th thru 28th, to detect and apprehend intoxicated operators. Missouri boat operators found to have a blood alcohol content of .08% or greater will be arrested for boating while intoxicated. Intoxicated boat operators endanger themselves, their passengers, and other boaters utilizing our many waterways. participated in a weekend long event of Last year, 585 local, state, and federal agencies heightened BWI enforcement known as Operation Dry Water. Officers removed 318 intoxicated boat operators from the water. In addition, law enforcement officers made contact with over 146,000 boaters concerning BWI or boating safety enforcement and awareness. From 2009 to 2014, over 1,800 BWI operators have been removed from the water by law enforcement officers during the Operation Dry Water weekends. In 2014, Missouri troopers arrested a total of eight people for boating while intoxicated, contacted 431 vessels and 1,390 boaters, and issued 72 boating violation summonses and 390 warnings on Missouri waterways. Marine operations troopers also issued 29 summonses for non-boating violations during the 2014 Operation Dry Water weekend. Special enforcement operations will continue throughout the summer months. Boaters are reminded that designating a sober skipper is always the safest bet if alcohol is going to be included in their boating experience.

William C. Crank, II from Rolla, Missouri, was sentenced to 28 months in prison involving his distribution of methamphetamine in March and April 2014, in Phelps County. He appeared before United States District Judge John Ross   last Thursday morning in St. Louis. This case was investigated by the South Central Drug Task Force. Assistant United States Attorney John Mantovani handled the case for the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The deadline is quickly approaching to submit nominations for Missouri’s 25th Annual Outstanding Older Workers of the Year contest. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to recognize older workers for the value they bring to today’s workforce. The last day to receive nominations is July 4, 2015. Nominees must be Missouri residents who are age 60 or older; employed at least 20 hours a week in a Missouri job site; and demonstrated success in learning new skills and job training. Regional winners will be selected from across the state and honored in September during a two-day awards ceremony in Jefferson City. The Outstanding Older Worker of the Year is sponsored by the Missouri Senior Employment Coordinating Committee that includes AARP Missouri; Experience Works; Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph; MERS/Missouri Goodwill Industries; Missouri Department of Economic Development/Division of Workforce Development; and the Department of Health and Senior Services/Division of Senior and Disability Services. A mandatory 4-H & FFA Marketing Meeting is going to be held tonight at 7:00 pm at the old City Hall auditorium. This mandatory meeting is for all kids with a market animal and/or cured meat projects at the Expo this year on July 18th. Anyone else who is interested may come for information on the Expo.

Kolten Wong smacked a two-run homer in the third inning and Jason Heyward added a three-run shot in the seventh, as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Miami Marlins 6-1. Jaime Garcia (3-3) yielded five hits and one run and had four strikeouts over seven innings for the NL Central Division leaders. Garcia is 7-3 over his last 12 road starts, dating to Sept. 15, 2012. The Cards will be in Miami again today at 5:15 with the pre-game show with game time scheduled for 6:00 on KSMO Radio.

Omar Infante drove in three runs to lead the Kansas City Royals in an 8-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners to wrap up a three-game series. Mike Moustakas hit a two-run home run while Alcides Escobar went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Royals, who took two of three in the set. The Royals are off tonight.

The Kansas City Royals activated pitcher Danny Duffy from the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday for his start against the Seattle Mariners. The team cleared a roster slot by optioning pitcher Michael Mariot to Triple-A Omaha.

Funeral services for Bettie Jane Stewart of Farmington, age 85, will be held today at 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 2:00 until service time. There will be no interment. Memorials may be made to the ASPCA.

Funeral services for Harry Hayes of Salem, age 82, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday night. Interment will be in the Cavanaugh Cemetery with full military hours. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

A Funeral Mass for Neal Farmer of Murfreesboro, TN, age 56, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 9:00 until service time Saturday morning. Interment will be in the St. Johns Lutheran Cemetery in Red Bud, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or PAWS of Murfreesboro. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
