The Salem R-80 Board of Education met Thursday evening at the District Administrative Boardroom. Superintendent John McCulloch reported on the roofing projects and leak currently at the seam between the Middle School and High School. This has been a continual problem and the district hopes to get it repaired when they bid out roofing projects at the High School Cafeteria, over the High School Principal's office and at a couple other areas. McCulloch said the current air conditioning units will also be converted to an air conditioning and heating system at the high school with a new motherboard, and maintenance will change the current air conditioning system only at William Lynch to air conditioning and electric heat so that the use of the boilers will no longer be necessary. This will take a new motherboard in the units along with some additional wiring. Mr. McCulloch said the parking lots would be sealed during the summer and that the new budget was about 97% complete. The Board of Education committee assignments were made for the 2015-2016 year and they are: CSIP – Holly Erway; Federal Programs – Drew Whitaker; A+ Programs – Larry Maxwell; Safety – Carrie Snider; Technology – Chris Heavin; and for Health Services – Dustin Howard. Mr. McCulloch went on to report the state will no longer use Smarter Balanced for assessment testing and that a new state test will be developed for grades 3-8, and the R-80 district passed the bus inspection with a 100% score. He thanked Terry Nash and Bob Moreland for all of their hard work. Summer school was well attended with 113 students at William Lynch, 150 at the Upper Elementary, and former High School Principal John Smith said there are two full sessions for the driver's education program with the first one just completed, and they was only 15 students in the Credit Recovery this summer. William Lynch Elementary Principal Kriste Crocker reported 89 new tigers were enrolled in kindergarten at this time, plus 61 preschoolers with another registration scheduled in August. Middle School Principal Scott Roberts reported the Salem Tiger Middle School Archery Team would be competing at the World Competition in Nashville, Tennessee, July 23rd through the 25th. High School Principal Smith wanted to congratulate Cody Lewis and Cameron Howard for finishing second in the Stock Market Game sponsored by the Missouri Council in Economic Education. There were 271 teams across the state and Salem took 2nd place in the High School Division. They ended the semester with a net profit of $106,120.50. Smith also reported the new College Advisor from the University of Missouri program at the high school is Lauren Clawson from Glen Ellyn, Illinois. This is a two-year program. The Board approved the WADA 5% transfer from Fund 1 to Fund 4 of $351,664, and declared surplus property the school will take bids on to sell that includes a 2005 diesel bus, as well as the triple wide and double wide trailers at William Lynch elementary as well as many other items. The list can be found on the Salem R-80 website for those interested. The board also approved a one-year lease to use the old City Library for the Developmental Preschool for $900 per month, paid upfront; and approved the resignations of high school Social Studies teacher Drew Long; high school social studies teacher Debbie Morton, and middle school math teacher Tori Snitiker. The board then went into closed session to discuss personnel.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, the State Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service are promoting Missouri Summer Safety Week this week to highlight the risks and dangers associated with excessive heat. In 2014, the Department of Health and Senior Services reported 18 heart-related deaths in Missouri. Some basic tips to protect you and your family during severe heat and heat emergencies include; check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioners, never leave children or pets alone in vehicles, eat light meals, drink plenty of water and limit alcoholic beverages. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible, protect your face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and wear sunscreen. Also avoid strenuous work during the warmest part of the day and use the buddy system. IF you DO NOT have air conditioning, spend the warmest part of the day in a public building such as a library, movie theater or shopping mall, and be aware of medications that may impair the body’s response to heat and sunlight.

The City of Salem will conduct a Planning & Zoning meeting, called by President Jerry Craig, tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers at 202 North Washington beginning at 5:30 pm. After a review of the minutes of the lasting meeting, there will be a review of the current Board members and vacancies and the Board will review their history for the past year. Board members will then give input and ask questions regarding the current status of codes and there will be an election of officers for the current year. There will be a discussion of setting priorities going forward, as well as establishing a regular meeting day. There will also be a Finance Committee meeting Monday night starting at 7:00 at the Salem Community Center @ The Armory to discuss the annual budget. The City of Salem Planning & Zoning meeting and the Finance Committee meeting are both open to the public.
