The Salem Board of Aldermen met Tuesday night at the city hall council chamber. City Administrator Ray Walden presented a request from Oak Grove Baptist Church to close West Gibbs Avenue from Missouri to the alley on the east side of the church and West Hunt Street from Missouri to the alley on the east side of the church on Thursday, July 19th from 6:00-8:30 PM for a Vacation Bible School Fun Run. This request was approved. Walden thanked the local media for their recent help disseminating information to the public regarding the recent water and sewer rate changes. A Finance Committee meeting will be held on Monday, June 22nd at 7 pm at the Salem Community Center and a Planning and Zoning Committee meeting on the same night at 5:30 PM in the Council Chambers. Walden reported that the Chamber of Commerce Fourth of July Parade will be held at 5:30 pm on the fourth and the city fireworks display will be held at the Commons. The city offices will be closed on Friday, July 3rd in observance of Independence Day. Mayor Tune reported that he and Walden met with Engineer Jeff Meadows regarding the McArthur Street project. Meadows has several recommendations to present to MoDOT for improvements. At the recent Capital Improvements Committee meeting, the department supervisors requested nearly $1.3 million for the upcoming budget year. Mayor J.J. Tune reported that he would present his recommendations for cuts to these requests at the Finance Committee meeting because there are not adequate revenue projections to cover all of the requested items. The board approved Bill No. 3290, an ordinance establishing new rates for city water and sewer services. City Clerk Mary Happel presented two trailer court licenses for approval, Layman Trailer Court at 703 South Pershing and The Finest Place located at 307 Truman Street. The board approved the licenses as long as the current violations are corrected within 30 days. Also approved was a budget adjustment to move $6,824.65 from the Capital Improvements Sales Tax Fund-Sewer Upgrade to the Capital Improvement Sales Tax Fund-Insituform Account. This is an increase in the original bid for re-alignment on East Scenic Rivers Blvd. between Mildred Blvd. and Doss Road. Approval was given to repair 10 transformers at a cost of $5,975 for the Electric Department, to purchase a new gearbox for the Sewer Water Treatment Plant at a cost of $4,528 plus shipping and approval was given to repair a pump at the Waste Water Treatment Facility for $4,795. The board then went into closed session to discuss contracts and personnel.

Colonel J. Bret Johnson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, reminds the public that flooding is extremely dangerous to motorists and boaters. Never drive through fast-moving waters; even a small amount of fast-moving water can sweep a slow-moving vehicle off the roadway. If your vehicle becomes stuck in rising water, get out quickly and move to higher ground. Due to continuing rainfall, several areas in Missouri are experiencing flooding. For your safety and that of your passengers, drivers are reminded to stay alert while driving in areas known to flood. Barricades closing a roadway are there to protect you. Drivers must respect barriers or barricades put in place by MoDOT. It is extremely dangerous and a violation of state law to drive around them. For information regarding road closures call the Road Condition Report hotline at 800-222-6400 or visit Missouri Department of Transportation’s (MoDOT) road condition map at the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s website www.mshp.dps.mo.gov.
