Jeffrey B. Hansen of St. Charles, owner of Hansen's Tree Service and Environmental Wood Resources Inc. that operates in St. Charles and in Branson, died in a plane crash Sunday morning near Cuba along with his pet dog after hitting turbulence near Rolla. According to eyewitness reports, the plane began to come apart in the air as it went down in a wooded area near the Cuba Airport. The wing of the plane was found a quarter of a mile from the plane crash site. Hansen was returning to St. Charles after being in Branson this weekend at his lake home. He and the dog were the only occupants in the aircraft.

An accident occurred at 3:50 Thursday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 32 about six miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2013 Honda CBR250RA driven by 26-year old James Crawford of Licking was traveling westbound on Highway 32 and traveled off the right side of the roadway. The Honda then returned to the shoulder where it overturned and ejected Crawford. Crawford

suffered moderate injuries and was transported by Salem ambulance to the Salem Memorial Hospital. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Honda sustained moderate damage and was removed by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting on Tuesday, June 16th at the City Hall Council Chambers at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. The Board will approve the agenda and minutes from the previous meeting. Then during the hearing of persons, Bill Riley would like to be able to use the court at the Salem Community Center@The Armory and would like a key to the building in order to play basketball on the weekends. Also, the Oak Grove Baptist Church is requesting some temporary road closures on Thursday, July 9th from 6:00 to 8:30 pm for a Vacation Bible School fun run. They are requesting the closure of West Gibbs from Missouri to the alley on the eastside of the church and West Hunt Street from Missouri to the alley on the eastside of the church. City Administrator Ray Walden will then update the Board on various items regarding the city, both current and in the future, followed by a report by Mayor J.J. Tune. During the reading of bills and resolutions, Bill #3290, an ordinance establishing new rates for water and sewer services provided by the city, which the Board approved at the last meeting following the Utility Committee’s recommendations will be presented to the Board. City Clerk Mary Happel will then present the trailer court licenses for approval by the Board. In new and miscellaneous business, Electric Department Superintendent Bryon Johns is requesting permission from the Board to go ahead and repair the 10 transformers that Solomon has already picked up since he still had money left in this year’s budget. The total cost for the 10 transformers was $5,975.00. Water/Sewer Superintendent Jack Emory is requesting to repair or replace the gear reducer at the Sewer Treatment Plant. To rebuild the old gearbox, it will cost $3,908.00 plus freight, and to purchase a new one would be $4,538.09 plus freight. The last time the city purchased one the cost was around $170. Emory is requesting permission to purchase a new gearbox. Also the Board will address the approval to repair a pump at the Waste Water Treatment Facility. The pump went down and is in need of repair. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing contracts and personnel. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman, Tuesday, June 16th at 7:00 pm, is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department has submitted reports. On Saturday June 6th at approximately 11:18 p.m. an officer located a 24 year-old female of Salem in the 1500 block of South Water who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County. The suspect was taken into custody on the warrant and released with a new court date after posting bond. On Sunday June 7th at approximately 3:09 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 23-year old male of Salem for driving while intoxicated. The suspect was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Monday, June 8th at approximately 6:00 in the evening, an officer was contacted in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown stole a green canoe valued at $2000.00 from the yard of a residence. The report is under investigation.   That same night at approximately 11:42, an officer made a vehicle stop due to the driver having an active arrest warrant from Dent County. That investigation led to the arrest of a 47-year old male of Salem on the warrant. The suspect was released to the Dent County Sheriffs Department. The St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals game Sunday was rained out after the Cardinals took the first two games of the series. No makeup date for the game was announced. On Friday night, the Cardinals won the game, 4-0 as Jaime Garcia went 8 innings and gave up only four infield hits. Then on Saturday, Tyler Lyons pitched five innings and got his first win in over two years as Mark Reynolds' home run in the bottom of the fifth inning was the difference and led the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 win. Matt Carpenter and Jason Heyward each drove in a run for the Cardinals, who have won three straight. Salvador Perez and Alex Gordon each hit a solo home run for the Royals on Saturday, who had won four straight prior to dropping the first two of this set. Jeremy Guthrie (4-4) allowed three runs on 10 hits over five innings. The Royals will travel to Milwaukee to face the Brewers tonight while the Cardinals will host the Minnesota Twins starting at 6:20 tonight on KSMO Radio.

There will be a Girls Basketball Camp from June 22nd through the 24th at the Salem Upper Elementary Gym. Girls in Grades 5 through 8 will meet from 9:00 to 11 in the morning, while girls in grades 9 through 12 will meet from 11:00 in the morning until 1:00 in the afternoon. The price of the camp is $20 and all girls can sign up on the first day, June 22nd, at the Salem Upper Elementary Gym.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 this morning at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem for Muriel Herbrand of Salem, age 83. Visitation will be held prior to the service starting at 10:00 at the church. Interment will be in the Bunker City Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Sylvia Ellen Green of Jefferson City, age 79, will be held Tuesday at 12:00 noon at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until service time Tuesday at the chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Welfare Society.

Memorial service for Dennis Lesley Schafer, age 61, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery.
