The Dent County Commissioners held their meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In road reports, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6010 and 6580 while brush would be cut on county road 5110. Purcell stated that a man would be hauling granite rock chips for an upcoming overlay project. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2030, 3110, 3295 and 3305. He said that two men would be patching chip and seal on Dent County Roads 3220, 3230 and 3235. Larson went on to say that one man would be hauling granite rock chips and one man would be screening brown rock. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be presiding over a Public Housing Authority meeting Thursday afternoon. Skiles also wanted to remind those that are on HUD, to be sure and read your contract as well as adhere to that contract. Skiles added that he would be attending a Transportation Advisory Committee meeting, the External Relations Committee meeting and then the regular Meramec Regional Planning Commission meetings in St. James on Thursday. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that bids were taken for diesel for the Road and Bridge Department. Two bids were received and the bid was awarded to MFA for 7,000 gallons of diesel at $1.955 a gallon. Curley went on to say that she balanced with the Dent County Collector and Dent County Assessor offices on collections, abatements and add-ons for the month of May. She said that bills were currently being approved. Curley also said that the Board of Equalization will be conducting a meeting on Monday, July 20th beginning at 1:00 pm at the Dent County Commission office. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department has submitted reports. On Thursday June 4th approximately 7:01 p.m. an officer was detailed to a residence in the 500 block of South Henderson in reference to an assault. Investigation of the report revealed a 48 year-old male of Salem had assaulted a 42 year-old female of Salem and violated an order of protection. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Later that night at approximately 9:54 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 1200 block of West Franklin in reference to someone laying on the edge of the street that had just been thrown or had jumped from a moving vehicle. Investigation of the report revealed a 26-year old female of Salem had jumped from a moving vehicle to escape a 41-year old male of Salem who was assaulting her. According to a witness the vehicle continued on leaving the scene. The victim was air lifted to Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis due to her injuries. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect for felonious restraint and 1st degree domestic assault. The suspect was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Friday June 5th at approximately 7:04 p.m. an officer was detailed to Casey's General Store in reference to a theft of fuel. Investigation of the report revealed that the driver of a green Jeep Cherokee pumped $20.01 in fuel and left without paying. The report is under investigation. On Saturday June 6th at approximately 10:00 p.m. an officer located a 19-year old male of Salem, in the Walmart parking lot, who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County. He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending a court appearance. An accident occurred at 3:45 Wednesday afternoon in Texas County on Slabtown Road about three miles east of Evening Shade. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Honda motorcycle driven by 41-year old Daniel Duncan of Licking was traveling eastbound and traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a tree and ejected Duncan into the tree. Duncan suffered serious injuries and was transported to Cox South Hospital in Springfield by Air Evac ambulance. He was not wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Honda sustained moderate damage and was removed by Arrington’s Towing of Plato.

First Annual Fiber Arts Celebration Exhibit will be held June 29th through August 1st at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center at 202 South Main Street in Salem. The Fiber Arts Celebration Exhibit will showcase hand-crafted items of practical and fine art in the categories of Embroidery, Needlepoint, Applique', Knitting, Crochet, Lacework, Macrame', Rug-making, Weaving and Fine Art. The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History will be hosting the first of two Ozark Kids Connection days for the season on Saturday, June 20, 2015. The program will be from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., so get ready to come out and spend the day learning and playing. There will be programs about Missouri bears and other mammals, snakes, critters and plants in the water, and Ozark geology. You’ll even get a chance to get in the water and help clean up the creek, identify items on the Ozark "stuff" table, and experience stories, songs, and other fun activities! Be prepared to get dirty and/or wet as these are all HANDS-ON activities (yes, even the snakes...)! Kids ages 5-15 may work toward getting the colorful Ozark Kids Connection patch for completing the activities. There is NO cost, but all children MUST be accompanied by an adult. There will be light refreshments, but you will need to bring your lunch (refrigeration is available.). The St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals both had the day off on Thursday. The St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals will start a three game series at Busch Stadium tonight beginning with the pre-game show beginning at 6:20 on KSMO Radio.

OBITUARIES     [TOP]

Graveside services for Clifford P. Smith of St. James, age 83, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the St. James Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 to 7:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 Monday morning at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salem for Muriel Herbrand of Salem, age 83. Visitation will be held prior to the service starting at 10:00 at the church. Interment will be in the Bunker City Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Sylvia Ellen Green of Jefferson City, age 79, will be held Tuesday at 12:00 noon at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until service time Tuesday at the chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Welfare Society.
