The Dent County Fire Protection District released reports for the second half of the month of May. A call came in on Tuesday, May 26th at 6:58 in the morning on Highway DD for an outbuilding or shed fire. A total of four fire fighters responded to provide mutual aid to the Lenox Rural Fire Department. All units were back in service at 9:35 am. A call came in at 6:57 in the morning on Wednesday, May 27th on county road 6200 for a building fire. A total of nine fire fighters responded with mutual aid received by the Jadwin Volunteer Fire Department. The fire was extinguished and all units were back in service at 10:30 am. A call came in at 5:00 pm on Thursday, May 28th on North Pershing for a gas leak. A total of five fire fighters responded to the call. All units were back in service at 6:15 pm. Later that day at 6:48 pm, a total of four fire fighters responded to Route H and county road 2340 for a reported motor vehicle crash with one patient complaining of a broken back. While en-route, it was determined that the incident was inside the Lenox Fire Department district. Information was relayed through the Dent County Sheriff’s Office. Dent County stayed on the scene until the Lenox Fire Department arrived in a privately owned vehicle. Contact was made with the Salem EMS and the patient was already packaged and almost ready for transport. EMS had previously requested the services of an air medical helicopter. No landing zone was found and it was determined by EMS that the landing zone would be the Dent County Fire Station. The landing zone was created and the scene was clear and all units returned to the station at 7:48 pm. A call came in at 7:54 in the morning on Saturday, May 30th on Highway 68 North. A total of five fire fighters responded to a vehicle accident cleanup. All units were back in service at 8:59 am. Later that day at 9:22 pm, a total of nine fire fighters responded to East Scenic Rivers Blvd for a building fire. The fire was extinguished and all units were back in service at 11:40 pm.

The Annual Rock Swap will be held June 12th thru the 14th at the Missouri Mines State Historic Site. The public will have the opportunity to buy, sell, swap or just admire rocks, minerals and fossils at the Missouri Mines State Historic Site in Park Hills.   Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the event will be held from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. This event will bring together rock hobbyists from across the Midwest and beyond. Participants will be selling, swapping or buying mineral specimens, fossils, rock jewelry and other rock-related items. There is no charge to attend. Also during the three-day event, there will be free admission to the historic site museum, which interprets Missouri’s mining history and displays restored old mining machinery and an outstanding mineral collection. The event is co-sponsored by the Mineral Area Gem and Mineral Society and the Greater St. Louis Association of Earth Science Clubs. Missouri Mines State Historic Site is located in Park Hills, on the south side of Highway 32 at the Flat River Drive overpass, 1.5 miles west of U.S. Highway 67. Ozark National Scenic Riverways will be hosting the Ozark Heritage Day Event at Big Spring on Saturday, June 13th, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The picking of banjos, the clanking of a hammer striking an anvil, the stomping of feet, and the neighing of a horse are just some of the sights and sounds visitors can experience during Ozark Heritage Day. The Ozark Depression Homestead at Big Spring will come alive with high stepping cloggers, bluegrass music, storytelling and Ozark folkway demonstrations during this FREE event. All are welcome. Journey into the past and experience old time traditional skills and craft demonstrations. Wool spinning, pottery, woodworking, chair caning, quilting, fiddle making, blacksmithing, and lye soap making are just some of the traditional Ozark lifeways demonstrated. Watch and learn some traditional Ozark dance moves by joining in on the clogging demonstrations by the Fireside Cloggers. Wear your dancing shoes and bring a blanket or lawn chair for the entertainment.   Traditional bluegrass music by Buzzard Run will abound featuring fiddle, banjo and the old time “Walking Cane” dulcimer. Youngsters can enjoy playing old-fashioned games. Food will be available for purchase from a local vendor. Big Spring is located four miles south of Van Buren, Missouri, on State Route 103. There will be a Girls Basketball Camp from June 22nd through the 24th at the Salem Upper Elementary Gym. Girls in Grades 5 through 8 will meet from 9:00 to 11 in the morning, while girls in grades 9 through 12 will meet from 11:00 in the morning until 1:00 in the afternoon. The price of the camp is $20 and all girls can sign up on the first day, June 22nd, at the Salem Upper Elementary Gym.

Carlos Martinez pitched out of trouble in every inning before giving up a home run on his last pitch and the St. Louis Cardinals hung on to beat the Colorado Rockies 4-2 on Wednesday to avoid being swept in a three-game series. The Cardinals pushed their lead to 3-0 in the fifth after Carpenter singled and scored on Reynolds' two-out double. Bettis retired the first eight Cardinals batters before Martinez singled to start a two-run rally in the third inning. Kolten Wong and Carpenter also singled to score Martinez and Wong came home on a wild pitch. Randal Grichuk stroked a solo homer and Matt Carpenter and Mark Reynolds also drove in runs for the Cardinals, who finished off a 4-3 road trip. The Cardinals will be off today, they will start a 3 game series with Kansas City on Friday.

Alex Gordon hit a three-run homer in a four-run opening frame, and Kansas City went on to best Minnesota by a 7-2 count in the finale of this three-game set. Mike Moustakas, Lorenzo Cain and Eric Hosmer each drove in a run for the Royals, who swept the series and have taken four in a row overall. The Royals are off today.

Graveside services for Marie Ralph of Salem, age 62 will be held today at 1:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be private. Memorials may be made to Project Win. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
